  1. The cleaner has a key giving access to where both the key and cash tin has been kept, not to the tin itself.
  2. No the police have not been called in as far as I am aware, I am considering calling them myself actually so if anyone had any thoughts about that I would be grateful. There is CCTV outside the building and out of hours the site main gate and building can only be accessed by calling the on site security. To get onto the same floor as the office in question, you need to swipe in using a fob. I have no suspicion that anyone has come into the building from off site to take this money. The people who either had access to keys or who would know where keys were would all have legitimate access to the building. I do not understand why the police have not been called, it seems as though I am being used as a scape-goat because I am the easiest suspect. Also I assume it is easier for them to pin this on me, rather than expose the fact that there were no adequate procedures to keep it secure.
  3. I have been suspended following the discovery that c £1200 is missing from the petty cash tin, I am the person who cashes this up at the end of the month and as of Friday it was correct, when the regular month end checks were done by my boss last night the missing money was noticed. I am not the only person with access to the tin, there are several keys in existance all of which are available in the office. The office is meant to be locked overnight with seven people including the cleaners having keys to this, however on Wednesday morning the office was not locked when I came into work. I believe I am the only person who has been suspended, pending investigation in the eyes of gossips I am sure I am already considered guilty, which I am not! I have been told by a friend that he has been asked to disable my IT accounts, something which is unnecessary unless they have already decided to sack me, as I have no access whatsoever to the building, having had my entrance fob removed before I was publicly escorted from the building, I assume that the talk of an enquiry is merely talk and the decision has been made. Evidently the matter has been being discussed somewhat freely. I should point out that co-workers, who have equal access to the petty cash tin, have been spoken to, but have not been suspended. I would also like to mention that these same co-workers are to be the people to assist in gathering information for any enquiry.. ... I would obviously be the first person suspected of this theft, and would have to be totally insane to risk my job and any prospects of employment in the future for this sum. I am aware that there are random spot checks on the contents of the tin, and it would be professional suicide to do this. I am innocent, but short of someone confessing I do not see how I am to prove this. I understand that the rule of law is usually innocent until proven guilty but in this case that does not seem to be being applied. I also understand that the case of Coral Racing v Monie states that it is fair to dismiss everyone who 'may' have stolen money if the employer cannot identify the thief, but if I am the only person suspended despite other people having equal acces and less obvious chance of suspicion falling on them, then surely this is being ignored? Please could someone suggest what action I should take?
