  1. Thanks for you replies. No they don't have a uk branch. Are you sure the uk laws apply? I spoke to someone at the OFT and ICO and they couldn't rely help as they thought the laws of the UAE applied. They did say however that they had no powers to recover the money. I really want to make some sort of complaint about this!
  2. The DCA are United Arab Emirates to Abu Dhabi Commercial Bank, debt collectors are Tahseel who are known for these tactics. The SB law doesn't apply its only in the UK.
  3. Hello all, I am in shock as to the lengths the UAE debt collections dept have gone to to recover money from my husband. Today whilst my husband was working in his office a member of the HR dept called him over and asked him quietly if he had ever lived abroad. The whole of the HR dept had received a very strong and threatening email from the debt collectors in the UAE telling them all of his debt which accrued in 2007! They had found my husband on LinkedIn, checked out who he worked for and emailed them! I am still in shock! Can anyone advise me as to whether they can do this? I know the laws in the UAE are very different and they can probably do what they want, but they cannot legally do anything to get the money back here in the UK (as advised by the national debt helpline.) Has this happened to anyone else?
  4. He would not be applying for credit, only visiting on business. He has a new passport with a new number which does not have his UAE visa on it. I have recenlty read that alerts have been dropped....
  5. >Hello all,I lived in Dubai in 2007 and due to the eonomic downturn we had to return to the UK after a year. My husband left his credit card debt unpaid...He has now been approached for a job which would involve travel to EMEA so possibly would be reqiured to travel to the UAE. We are really worried that he may be stopped at immigration and goodness knows what would happed. I have read that the UAE have dropped alerts against debt skippers. But still we are worried.
  6. Thanks ODC, wow sounds like they use dirty tricks to get phone numbers! Is this not illigal? What a nasty lot! I hope they don't harrass my Mum.
  7. Hello, I've just found out some woman from this company has phoned my family home (parents house) where I have not lived for years and have left a message and reference number for me to call them back. Having read some very interesting things about them on this forum I'm not quite sure what to do. I don't really want to phone them and get abuse. The debt they are chasing is more than likely statute barred but I know they love chasing people for these debts. Should I call them back? I'm sure they will call my mum again (who has said she will tell them I've moved abroad if they do call back!)
  8. Hello all, I hope some of you can help me. My husband and I lived in Dubai back in 2006 and my husband had a bank account and credit card with ABN AMRO, we left the same year having not paid back hubby's debts (I know very naughty) and have now 3 years later received a letter from Royal Bank of Scotland who have taken over ABN saying they want the money back. I'm not sure where my husband stands as this is international debt and what laws would cover us. It says in the letter that they will contact solicitors if we don't pay them in 14 days. The amount is £11,000! it was no way near that much in 2006 thay have added interest and charges etc. I'm tempted to call them and say that the person does not live at the address. Please help!
  9. Hi, I've found the letter thanks so much for all the advice, my husband also received a letter from SLC so he will be fighting as well. I'll keep you all posted.
  10. Thanks so much! Does anyone have a template letter I can send to them?
  11. I have not paid a penny, but I did get a letter from SLC before xmas and called them to sort it out, they said my debt was with capquest so I call them and was told that it was not with them anymore but back with SLC, So I called SLC back (what a pallaver!) and the man said he would look into it and call me back, I have not heard from them since. But I have been getting many calls from someone who is withholding ID, I gave SLC my mobile number, it might be them but I'm ignoring them they should just write to me. As I have called them to discuss does this mean by case is not Statute Barred, I have not filled out forms or anything to offically say its my debt.
  12. Hello all, I'm new to this forum and was wondering if the Student Loans Company comes under the heading of collections agencies? My debt went to Capquest but I ignored the letters and now has gone back to the student loans company who have now contacted me. I got the loans out between 1993-1997. Can they still chase me for the money?
