  1. No I never said he had two items, he only had a T Mobile dongle for broadband. His mobile phone is PAYG and not with T Mobile. The letter arrived and obviously got to the right dept as they say they contacted him,not sure which method they used, to say writing a letter wasn't enough. Well this is what the T Mobile shop said. Anyway thanks everyone for your help and advice and I will pass it on to him.
  2. He followed thru in the respect that after he sent the letter and once he was abroad he asked me to go into the T Mobile shop and check that the contract was cancelled. They said it wasn't and he needed to phone them as a letter wasn't enough. It's unfortunately if in this country a letter of instruction has to be followed up by phone calls and emails just to make sure that the instructions on his letter are carried out. Surely the companies should be able to follow the customers wishes after he writes them a letter ? I'm sure that after he wrote the letter it was a couple of weeks at least before he went abroad so surely they had time to write back and say fine the contract is now cancelled thank you for using T Mobile for the last two years. They must have got his letter if they have contacted him to say the letter isn't enough. What do they do read the letter and then chuck it in the bin ? I remember a time when you could write one letter to a company to cancel and they would cancel.....why have companies become so inefficient ? My brother wrote a letter and thought they would follow his instructions. If he was wrong in not emailing and phoning as well then I think our methods of doing business need to change.
  3. Thanks for that. Well I'm surprised that a signed letter saying you wish to cancel the service is insufficient according to T Mobile. And a stamp can also be cheaper than calling from a mobile and waiting in line to speak to an advisor.
  4. My brother had a contract for two years with T Mobile for a broadband dongle for internet. He paid it every month but after two years and three months he wrote to them saying he wanted to cancel the contract as he was going abroad to the Philippines. He's 70 and likes to do things the old fashioned way and as he only has a mobile for voicecalls he doesn't phone much especially as some nos from a mobile are expensive to call. He asked me if T Mobile had written back to confirm the cancellation and I said I'd checked his mail and no. He's in the Philippines now. I went into the T Mobile shop in town and gave them his details and they said the account is active and can't be cancelled in writing he has to phone up T Mobile to cancel. My brother has emailed me to say it's quite difficult for him to ring them from the Philippines and can be expensive. A letter has now arrived telling my brother he's £14.99 in arrears. He cancelled his DD to T Mobile before he left. So what now ???????
  5. Argos Clearance Stores say I can't return the faulty item to them I must return it to their repair company D&J Hendry. Paypal have told me I am correct in my responses to Argos regarding dealing with the vendor only. I bought via ebay and then Argos Clearance Stores and used Paypal for the purchase. Now I don't know if D&J Henry is part of the Argos group or not ? I have stated I want a full refund only, no repair or exchange. I've also stated that I should be able to return to the vendor with whom I have a contract of sale and it's up to them if they want another company to check it, but unfortunately you just get the stock answer "Our selling pages state faulty items must be returned to D&J Henry". So they feel their own rules supercede UK Consumer law. Are Argo and Argos Clearance Stores the same company and if so where can I find the address for their head office ? Is a county court summons sent to their head office ? Thanks.
  6. I went to the ebay dispute and opened a dispute and the reply said no to a refund and contact by phone D&J Henry who deal with their computer returns. They then closed the dispute. That's how helpful Argos Clearance Stores are. I then went to Paypal and opened a dispute and they have replied no refund contact D&J Henry who deal with returns and repairs. All I want is my money back on a faulty netbook. If I buy from Argos Clearance I feel I should only have to deal with them. I should be able to send it back to them and if they then want to send it to their computer repair and servicing fine......but let them do it not me. Dealing with one party Argos Clearance bargains should be enough.
  7. I bought a netbook 10" Zoostorm Freedom from Argos Clearance Stores via ebay where they selll their stuff. These items have been returned by customers to the main Argos stores for one reason or another. The Clearance stores has the item checked over until it's full working and then resells via ebay at a reduced price. I ordered item on 12 Aug and received on 17 Aug and paid with Paypal. The webcam wasn't working when it arrived but I started using it anyway and now the wireless card has stopped working. With a netbook which you carry around you need the wireless card. I've contacted Argos Clearance stores via ebay Ask Seller A Question and asked to send item back for a full refund as it's faulty. I don't want a repair or replacement. They have said to phone D&J Henry who do their repairs and refurbishment. My contract is with Argos Clearance stores and I don't want to deal with any third party. Any advice appreciated.
  8. I'm using a mobile dongle right now but as I'm in a rural area it's 2G so I get poor download speeds as it's like the old dialup service. I might get 40kbps/20kbps. I'm not near a mast that gives 3G so the landline or satellite BB are my only options.
  9. Yes I can understand that Openreach don't want to spend time going over the whole length of the line as I am on a long line to the exchange or do anything in the exchange or try filters etc as this costs them money. The Openreach guy came out and did a site survey, in other words he attached a meter to the line on the pole outside my house and checked how much signal there was and then gave a positive report to the ISP who then went ahead with the new line installation and the activation of BB.
  10. Thanks for your reply. The thing is I make all voicecalls on my mobile so the phoneline is redundant unless I can use it for broadband. I said when ordering that the phoneline was only for an internet connection. When they rang me last week to say I couldn't get BB I asked if there were any charges to pay and they said no. I told them I was therefore cancelling my DD and then went after the call finished and cancelled my DD as all charges were going to be paid from the first DD which was to begin on the 2nd of July. I wonder if the ISP can go back to Openreach and dispute the charge for phoneline installation as it was done after Openreach did the site survey and said I could get BB at my address ?
  11. I have a friend who was with Tiscali for broadband and their tel line was BT. Talktalk contacted them and said they were taking over the service and offered my friend a tel line and broadband but my friend only wanted broadband and not the tel service. They said they had to take both so my friend moved to Demon for internet. Then Talktalk started taking money from their account not sure if it was DD or continuous credit card payment and hassling them even though my friend wrote to them telling them they don't have any service fromTalktalk, they were with Tiscali but cancelled and went with Demon for their internet. Eventually they got the money back.
  12. I live in a rural area and am a long way from the tel exchange. I contaced an ISP who do a line rental and BB all on one monthly bill and it's only a one month contract and not long contracts like BT. They told me they would arrange for Openreach to do a site survey to see if I could get BB, in other words was there enough signal at my tel pole outside my house. They came back and said the Openreach report was positive so I agreed to pay £110 for a new line from the tel pole to my house and an activation fee of £47 for BB and £27.99 a month which is £10 for the line only ( no inclusive calls ) and £17.99 for the broadband. I told them I make all voicecalls using my mobiles, a phoneline would only be for BB. If you just want a line and no broadband it's £10.99 and if you make any voicecalls they are charged per min. If you also take broadband the line rental is only £10 per month. The line was activated and I used the internet for three days and it worked pretty good but not that fast 350kbps/340kbps. This was OK and better than no internet as I am on a longline so can't expect too much. After three days I had to disconnect the router for an hour as I was moving some furniture out of the house and the router was on a table in the lobby. When I plugged the router back in it would not sync with the exchange.I did also try another router and cables. I contacted the ISP who arranged for an Openreach engineer to call and he plugged in his laptop and did some diagnostic tests and left after 45 mins. A few days later the ISP contacted me and said that they had received the Openreach report and they said I could not receive BB at my address. The ISP said they were sorry and they would scrap all charges. I said fine, and as I was due to pay next month for everything by a new setup DD I would cancel the DD and the ISP said OK and if I moved house and got closer to an exchange to come back to them for service. This is a good ISP and they do try to be helpful and phone you and tell you what is happening. They asked if I wanted to keep the phoneline and I said no and as said before I make all my calls using my mobiles so a phoneline isn't much use unless I can use it for BB. Unfortunately this hasn't happened and it looks like I'm going to keep paying £10.99 a month for the phoneline. Anyway I went today into my online account with the ISP and they have scrapped the activation fee and broadband charges but they are still going to bill me for the line installation of £110 and also line rental and as it's a phoneline only it's £10.99 per month and not £10 which it would be if I had phoneline and BB. Of course as I've cancelled the DD I'm not sure what will happen. Everything, new phoneline and BB was done because Openreach said I could get BB at my address otherwise I'd have said to the ISP forget it. So am I still liable for the new line installation and the £10.99 phoneline monthly rental that I won't use ? If Openreach would make an effort they could probably get me going again but it's time and money for them and obviously not worth it. Five years ago I had a phoneline at this address and BB and it worked pretty good and on ADSL Max I was getting DL speeds of 970kbps. Unfortunately after about nine months the line deteriorated and the speed went right down to about 230 kbps and neither the ISP at the time or Openreach could find out why. The last two miles to the exchange has both a copper and an aluminium line to the exchange and I've often wondered if I was switched to the aluminium line and that's why the line went downhill but of course I have no way of finding out. I haven't had a phoneline for 2 1/2 years and the oldline from the house to the tel pole blew down last winter. So now I'm stuck with no BB and a new tel line and monthly fee of £10.99 although I can give 30 days notice to end the tel line rental. I could also I suppose try another ISP for phoneline and BB but they still have to go thru Openreach and I don't think they want to spend any time on my line finding out if there are any faults on the line, they just say long line no BB too bad. I'll pay if I have to but I do wish Openreach had decided I couldn't get BB before I set the rest in motion. Any advice appreciated.
  13. Thanks for that. They will also be very cross with the tenant who told the applicant about the damage to the neighbouring property, if they find out who it is! That's a pity as people will sometimes ask neighbours what an area is like. The applicant has and I believe may have stated in their application to the council that they had asthma. The applicant asked a neighbour of the property she was about to view later that day about the area and the neigbour told her about the problems with the house she was being offered and that a couple of years before kids smashed the window in the house she was being offered and a few others including the neighbours. There is a lane at the side of this house where the front door is and another lane that overlooks the livingroom and the bedroom. The applicant didn't want to say to the housing officer who showed her the property that she'd found out from the neighbour in the house at the other side of the lane about the window smashing incase the housing officer said anything to the neighbour. If she'd mentioned it the housing officer would have wanted to know who told her. With her having problems a number of years before with kids and vandalism she felt unconfortable accepting the house and possibly encountering more problems. Can an appeal be made if someone is put off the list for a year ? The previous problem with kids and vandalism did have the police involved but the applicant may have trouble remembering the dates of the incidents as this was about 2001. Not sure how much info the police need to check back into the incidents. I wonder if the name address and year is enough to bring up the vandalism reports on the police computer.
