multiple car insurance

Just a bit of advice please - family of 4, 3 with own cars and insurance. I have just bought my learner driver daughter a cheap car (she wont be driving it until shes passed her test) and was looking to insure it so I can use it a couple of times a week to keep it turning over. NFU have just said that if I up my own insurance to fully comp then I can drive the other car and be covered 3rd party without it being insured - is this right? I thought the car in question would have to have its own policy one way or another

Hi I had to pick up my nieces car on my fully comp insurance when she was stopped by police at 2am only to find out that the insurance had lapsed.

Providing that the other car (the one you bought for your daughter) is not owned by you or registered in your name then a fully comprehensive policy usually has a DOV (driving other vehicles) extension, which means that you can drive another car on a third party basis.

Be very clear about this level of cover, it only covers any claim a third party might make against you in the event of an accident. There would be no cover for damage to your daughters car, nor would it be insured against fire or theft.

Immediately that you ceasing driving it, it reverts to your daughters insurance (or no insurance if she has none - which means in turn that under no circumstances can you park it on the public highway).

DOC cover extends only to driving other cars, not using other cars
