Insurers cannot trace policies

Hello all
Dad died recently and among his papers were a number of policies for Scottish Legal Life Assurance, some in his name and in mine.
The above company have been taken over by Scottish Friendly Assurance.
I sent the policies but the company have come back to say they have been unable to trace any value attached to the policies.
They also say that they are only obliged to keep records for a determined number of years but dont say what that period is. Dad was 82 when he died.
I dont have premium receipt books.
I know dad keep these policies safe because they were never claimed but am I wasting my time pursuing them? They are not of significant value.
Tried the archives on the forum but couldn't find anything which matched my problem.
Any advice appreciated.

I remember coming across something like this in one of those newspaper help columns - the Telegraph I think it was. I'll try and dig it out online if I can and let you know what it said
