Default Sky car insurance cancellation help

Hi,

I recently purchased car insurance with sky, as I was going to buy a new car, I phoned sky on Tuesday 24th June and was starting the policy on the Friday, the day I was going to pick the car up.
I paid up front for the policy.

But on the Wednesday I had some bad news that I could lose my job, so I had to cancel getting the car and on the Thurdsay I phoned sky to cancel my policy 1 day befor it started. I was told to send it in writing, which I did and sent it off on the Friday via recorded delivery so I know they would have it on the Saturday.
Then last Thursday I get a letter saying they are charging me £350 for cancelling my policy, so basically they are only refunding so much back to me.

I think this is a right rip off, and just wondering where I stand, can I get this money back or are they right.

I thought you were supposed to have cooling off periods in which you can cancel your policy (usualy 14 days).

I know when I took out an insurance policy with adrian flx, I cancelled that because I didn't agree with some of their terms and all I got charged was £30.

Or is this why I am getting charged so much, because I told them I could no longer get the car the policy was for, rather than not agreeing with their terms, or does that not make a difference.

Hope someone can help me pretty quickly

thanks

I don't think this sounds right. If you cancelled the policy before it even started, and it was within the 14-day cooling off period, I don't think you should be charged anything. I would ask them to clarify why you have to pay a charge, and in any case, a cancellation charge shouldn't be as severe as £350.

I phoned to cancel before the policy started, but because they wanted it in writing,it was a few days into the start of the policy.

The original quote was £799

Here's what they said in the letter they sent.

'We are in receipt of your cancellation request and write to advise that after deduction of the insurer's and our charge and commision, a refund of approximately £452.05 will be forwarded within four to six weeks.'

So that's nearly £350

What do their T&C's say about cancellation and cooling off period. I can't find them on their website.
