Informing my insurance company

Hi everyone,

Whilst heading back to the depot in my bus (empty) I had a collision with a vehicle, completely not my fault, PC who attended said I had to inform my private car insurance company of the incident. I do not mind doing this I have nothing to hide, however, could someone please explain WHY?

i dont see why either so i wouldnt its not like it was your personal private car and your going to make a claim via them so theres no need to, i dont understand why the police officer said that other than maybe as part of the job he ha to say that to you??? i personally wouldnt if i was you

If this is what the policeman has advised you to do, then do it. It's a
5 minute call out of your day & your insurers will tell you whether they need to know or not. It's best to keep them informed of any changes that may affect your policy in some way. Although I am not entirely sure why they would need to know, it may be something to do with any potential injury claims under your legal expenses cover....ring them & see!

I suspect it may be a material fact on your driving record, it shouldn't affect your private car insurance if it is divulged, however if you don't and it comes out in a claim under your own Policy it may well be held against you as non-disclosure. I would regard it the same way if you had been caught speeding in your bus and got a ticket, OK it isn't your car but does form part of your driving history for insurance purposes.

Accidents / claims do need to be disclosed to your insurer whether under your own insurance or not. This is so an underwriter ( I use the term loosely when talking about personal lines insurance ) can fully asses the risk and apply the appropriate loading. In this instance however, you need not inform them immediately but at renewal where you have to declare any material changes to the your personal circumstances.
