Default Sureterm 4x4 insurance

I took out vehicle insurance to insure a 4x4 with a specialist insurance company. I paid them a deposit of £104 and the remainder of the payment was to be taken by direct debit. The policy commenced on the 20th September but then I sold the vehicle on the 24th September. I rang up the same day to cancel and they told me I had to send in the certificate before they would cancel the policy. I have now sent that it in and they have told me there is a £50 cancellation fee with them as brokers (I was unaware it was going through a broker), £30 with the insurance company who underwrote the policy and they have said they will also add charges on pro rata for the time I had the insurance.

I have not signed any terms and conditions for this policy, only given verbal instructions. They accepted verbal instructions to start the policy but would not take this to cancel on that date...even though I would have still sent off paperwork after cancelling. Can they request anymore from me seeing as I have not signed anything. It seems an exorbitant admin fee for what amounted to approximately a five minute phone call and a couple of sheets of A4 paper. Surely it was also still within the 14 days I had to cancel the insurance anyway?

I'm not sure what charges will be levied against me further (They also took £20 for the legal cover which was non refunable) so I guess its going to be over the £100 odd pound I paid originally.

I accept there will always be a fee for cancelling but two admin fees, refusal to cancel on the date I phoned instruction through obviously leads to more charges.

Will wait and see what comes of it but wonder if its still within 14days of the policy starting I had a right to cancel anyway?

Default Re: Sureterm 4x4 insurance

Hi

I've been insured with them for about five years (Have a Range Rover and my trusty 88 and to be fair I've found their service really good - weird that you say that you didn't know they were brokers though as I know its detailed on their website and they say it every time you phone!!

I had to cancel a car in February and I experienced the same prorata refund + £50 admin (again detailed in the terms) but they did give the amount back against a new policy when I insured the new Range Rover).

I suggest if you are going to buy another Land Rover or 4x4 let them know and they'll probably help....

Extra point - I usually deal with a bloke called Mark Jackson - suggest you ask for him.

FYI - I know another Range Rover owner who insured with another Insurance specialist (who shall remain nameless here for now!!) and he didn't get a refund at all when he cancelled - so I suppose things ain't that bad. But as I say call Jackson and tell them what I said.
