Default Any advice

I had a fall out with my insurance company Quinn Direct about a mod i did on my car (£50 mod) which made no difference to performance, handeling or looks. They wanted another £150 of me for it. I told them they can whistle im going else were.

I started another policey with another company, and Quinn Direct cancelled mine due to the fact i would not pay the £150. 2 weeks went by and no No Claims Discount. I rang sent emails and a letter all i got was we will sort it out. I got an email today saying i cant have it because i owe them £63 i know i dont and have asked them to prove that i do owe it.

Now my problem is my insurance company have now told me that my premium is going to double due to the fact that i cant prove i have 5 years no claims, ive explained im in dispute with my old company but there not bothered. My insurance is high due to the fact i drive a high performance group 16 car so its going to jump from £400 a year to £800 without my no claims discount.

Can my old insurance company refuse to give me this even though that information is about me and that would be a breach of the data protection act.

Any help will be much appreciated

Quinn Direct are very quick to cancel policies. they did it to me because after I notified them of an address change. Their system was down when I called, but they said they'd sort it and send me a new certificate and details of any change in premium by post. In fact, all I got was a demand for £55 which, when I phoned them, was variously described as an admin fee, a replacement certificate fee, and additional premium! They said they'd send me a new certificate and an invoice, and that I should pay then, but on the same day I also received notice that they had cancelled my policy.

I spoke to one of the managers, and all he did was repeat that they never make mistakes, and that they would have asked for payment over the phone at the time. They absolutely refused to reinstate the policy or help in any way. Subsequently I insured elsewhere (for less!), but am still pursuing Quinn Direct for proof of no claims.

In a word, yes. If there is an outstanding balance on an account (whether correct or not) then we can decline to provide your POB and we would be within our rights to do so.
This is a really common problem nowadays, especially as more and more insurers are now asking for pob upfront rather than checking it at the time of a claim. The only thing i can suggest you do is pay the extra to your new insurer, at least you'll still be covered, once you have sorted out the issue with quinn, you can then provide your POB to your new insurer and they will refund you anything you have overpaid.
