Holiday Insurance

Hi,

Wondering if any has any advice for my sister concerning holiday insurance.

She's supposed to be going to Los Angeles on friday (23 June) to visit a friend over there.
Anyway, my sister got a phone call on sunday night to say that her friends gran is seriously ill and they have been told she is dying. Naturally the girl wants to stay as close to her gran and family as possible which has resulted in my sister having to cancel her trip.

This would have been my sisters 1st trip abroad and she doesn't want to go and spend a week by herself in a strange country, she has phoned her insurance company and they have said the only way she has any chance of a refund is if she gets a death certificate for the gran.

Question is, can they insist upon this or is there another way she could claim? The woman hasn't died yet and hopefully she won't in the near future but my sister can't afford to lose £600.

Unfortunately, they can insist on a Death Certificate - this is because as an Insurance Company they have to substantiate the claim.

However, if you read the policy terms and conditions, you may find that she is able to claim for Illness of a Close Relative of someone the insured is staying with... To 'substantiate' this, on the Cancellation claim form should be a Medical Certificate which the General Practitioner of the Ill will need to complete...

All a bit confusing I know!
