Beneficial Credit Card - Paid in Full Just received the statements for the wife's Beneficial card. This had a credit limit of £250 and the outstanding balance had reached over £700 at it's peak, only £200 odd of which was spending. A late payment charge of £20 took it over the £250 limit and she got hit with another £20 for being over the limit and it took off from there!
I paid it off with a payment of just over half of the outstanding balance around 18 months ago.
The statements we have been sent still have an outstanding balance on them, right up to the present day although the interest being charged is nil, the minimum payment is nil and the spending on the account is nil. How can this be given that the account is closed? Barclay card did this also, again, the account is closed. Surely the balance is nil if the payment accepted by them is full and final and the account is closed.
Over the two odd years she had the card the charges totalled several hundred pounds. Now my question is this; were we to claim the full amount of charges debited (as indicated month by month on the statements) would they reply by stating that as there is an outstanding balance on the account any charges would go to pay that off first? This could appear to indicate a prior knowledge that charges would be claimed (or at least that they were entirely fictitious amounts that deliberately inflated the amount owing) and that is the reason that a balance "owing" is left on the account and that the account is still apparently open. This is in spite of the fact that they have accepted a "full and final" settlement.
I intend to claim for the full amount of charges, as indicated on the statements, I presume however they will argue as above and we will end up just receiving the difference between the amount that she spent and the full and final payment that I made.
Frankly I do not care either way, this is money that I thought we would never see again anyway but I am curious to know what others experience is regarding this.
