Default E-igarettes v Zyban...

Hi, I know that e-cigarettes have not been accepted widely as yet but I do feel that I should relay my experiences with them...and with Zyban.

It would be fair to say that Zyban very nearly killed me. Dramatic? Yes, but so is the uncontrollable urge to drive into the nearest tree! I have no mental health history and would consider myself to be a very 'normal' person and so would urge extreme caution when using Zyban. I feel very strongly that the dangers it can present are grossly played down.

On the other hand I find it quite upsetting that e-cigarttes are not being widely heralded as the most amazing quitting aid that they undoubtedly are. I have found them to be the ONLY substitute for smoking that in any way emulates smoking. As such it has made quitting easy for me. Bearing in mind that I smoked 30 a day for 35 years I'd say this is quite an accomplishment.

Plus, it's fun to smoke down the local again

You owe it to yourself to at least check these links out...

I'm down to 4/5 real cigs a day from 20+ using e-cigarettes. I've only had the thing a couple of weeks and I find it miraculous. I plan to gradually reduce the nicotine levels and honestly expect the habit of smoking to decline along with that. I really love smoking and this has been the only thing that has worked for me. E-cigarettes were in the news some time ago because they are not properly tested. Well they might cause me some harm but real cigarettes definitely do so I reckoned they were worth a go.

That's great to hear and good luck I'm with you on the 'might be harmful' thing. We know for SURE that tobacco's about as bad as it gets and nicotine alone would have to go some to match that. My wife's a midwife and tends to research alot of medical stuff on the net. There's plenty of stuff which nicotine is actually the TREATMENT for so someone's done some testing on it, lol.

I predict that there'll be an e-cig explosion in 2009...hopefully every bar/restuarant in the country will have them on the menu very soon!

I guess the reason they're not looked upon too favourably is because smokers can use them to carry on the habit in pubs and clubs. People don't see them as a way of cutting down and eventually quitting. I love that I can truly choose whether or not to have a cigarette and most of the time I choose not to. As a nicotine addict of over 30 years I can wean myself off the dreaded weed without the panic that has always set in before. I'll give up the crutches one by one and a little at a time. I know there are experts that insist you set a date to give up and never smoke another cigarette but that's never worked for me and e-cigs are doing.

Hi Hightail,

You might like to look into Champix as well/at the same time. It really reduces the NEED. I have tried ALL the NRT type products and this one worked for me. I'm with you all the way as far as Zyban is concerned, I was a very dangerous person to be around when I was on that stuff and thats most unlike me.

They are an electronic device that looks like a real cigarette consisting of a battery, an atomiser and a cartridge. You draw on it just like a real cigarette and get water vapour and nicotine. At present I am using high level nicotine cartridges but you can reduce the strength so I plan to go down through medium and low. You can even get zero nicotine cartridges. One cartridge lasts about the same as 15 cigarettes and you change it as needed.

I really went in for this hoping to at least substitute every other cigarette and within a couple of days had reduced my tobacco consumption by about 80%.

I have two different makes and definitely have a preference though I don't think I'm allowed to post links here.

For anyone who's serious about quitting (I just have after 35 years) below is a link to the e-cigarette forum. Please do yourself a favour, disregard all the nay-sayers and go take a look. It's the best move I ever made and it could be yours too...

e-cigarette-forum.com • The place for electronic cigarette reviews, news and chat

ALL other methods have been useless to me...these things give you back your freedom to chose and they simply DO work.

Oh, and this is probably the best place to buy e-cigarettes and accessories from...totally reliable (and no, I'm nothing to do with them eccept that I buy from them)...

Hi Blarney
Don't know how you're getting on with your e-ciggie. But reading your post at Christmas I went on line and treated myself to one of these. Managed to get a starter pack for just under £20.00.

I must say I'm impressed - I'm working on the principle that I've not stopped smoking (30+ a day for 40+ years) I've just cut down buying....

I'm now down to buying just 10 a week - (my treat for the weekend - some folks buy beer - some folks buy chocolate - I buy 10 cigs).

Hi Wils,
Great to hear it's going well for you. The e-cig's worked miracles for me and my wife...we haven't had a real cig since before xmas and don't think we'll ever feel the need for weed again. Brilliant

I've been a twenty a day smoker for over forty years and didn't even think about giving up until a girl I worked with showed me the e-cig she had bought.

I bought a starter pack for £35.00 and, although it's early days, they do seem to work- and just the thought of saving so much money spurs me on.

E-cigarettes are definitely the way to go as a healthier alternative to normal tobacco cigarettes.

My brand of e-cig has a pretty good FAQ on their site which answers a lot of these questions. Check it out:

Electronic Cigarette FAQ

Ive been smoking electronic cigarettes for a while now, so maybe I can help others with questions. Just let me know.
