So that is why stock prices were taking a hit today in financial services sector. Thank God, I thought I was going to have to log out and read the BBC website.

Can I just add that if this does hit the banks hard I feel very sorry for those working in banks that have no control over the way banks mistreat people and that try to show customers respect where possible

P.S: good luck Gordon, boy are you going to need it now

(and for what its worth you're a prize git (IMHO and not that of the site owners!) for bailing out B and B, where will it end?)

ncf, I am one of those bankers. I work in one of the banks that so far have announced a total of 0 job losses and are expected to announce 0 job losses and 0 branch closures over the coming months. I am what you might call, as well, a smug banker

Well,

if thats the case and you treat customers with respect I wish you the very best for the coming months

I think we might all (not just bankers) need it

Farcical that a few americans getting arsy with each other and throwing their toys ou the cot on something so important may well bring us all down

Also today:

Fortis had 9bn pumped into it to save it

The take over of Wachovia by Citi-group plus some tax payer funds

The 3rd largest Icelandic bank was also nationalised.

Germany's Hypo Real Estate, the commercial property lender, which has received a whopping £28bn in credit guarantees from the German government in collaboration with a consortium of banks.

Bad day all round!

Fortis is why RBS shares went down as they were partners in the ABN AMRO deal. Now the penny drops.

As much as people think banks are getting what they deserve, please bear a thought for us poor workers. I have been made redundant once, but was lucky enough to find a job, others I know have not been, and contrary to popular belief, we are all not paid a fortune. I cannot afford lovely foreign holidays every year, we only have the one car and i'm mortgage up to the hilt in order to get on the property ladder. I know of people who are pleading poverty and slamming the banks that are in a far better position than I am. Poverty is subjective, one acquaintence I know of said she was now poverty stricken because her interest rate went up and she couldn't remortgage, so now she was thinking of shopping in Sainsburys rather than Waitrose, oh the pain lol.
