My AMEX is chip and signature, but before I was issued with the pin number I went to a well known PC computer store, it's a WORLDwide company.

Anyway, went in, bought whatever it was I was buying, went to pay with the AMEX. Was asked to enter my PIN. Didn't have one. Was told by the cahier that it was this stores policy not to accept cards without a PIN number, asked to speak to manager, who advised that they had full rights to refuse payment by a card without a pin number.

Is this right? Can they simply refuse payment?

Retailers can refuse any payment method including cash.

However the good old Chip & PIN people advise you to contact them if you have any trouble using your Chip & Signature Card:

I have entered my PIN incorrectly 3 times and had it 'locked out' I called the HSBC to get a new pin issued, they advised it would 'unlock' after 24hours. It has done exactly as stated but is a great hassle! i would rather sign for my goods or have a photo of me on the card to prove I Am Me

I bet when it comes to disputed transactions not many are aware of the Banking Code article 10.2.

Unusual transactions -

In some cases, we will need you to give us confirmation or evidence that you have not authorised a transaction.

Very difficult if someone's used your PIN before you report your card lost or stolen. Very easy if you stick to signatures.

That's the whole idea of the banks "you must have disclosed your pin" Can't say that about a signature can they. All under the guise of added security. They really are the pits are they not

some info if it hasn't been posted before, didn't read page 1 and 2, if the PIN has been locked for chip and PIN or if you have had a transaction refused and you are able to use the cash machine and there is sufficient money in the account to cover the transaction you were trying to make, here is how you unlock the pin. STEP 1 is to go to an atm of the bank the card has been issued through. STEP 2 go onto the first menu of options that include Mini Statements etc, etc, STEP 3 go into other services or pin services or maybe under additional services. STEP 4 there should be an option to unblock PIN number. If this should sort the problem out. If it still causes a problem contact your bank because you will probably need a new card.

Chip and Pin sucks! i should know, ive just had my card cloned and some clever chap has walked away with £2300 on my money in just 2 days! i called my bank, stopped the account, but there was £1400 more transactions "earmarked" for payment which apparently my bank(Woolwich) couldnt stop!! so i watched the screen at the bank for 5 mins and saw another £1400 of my money going to someone else!

Ive filled in the claim forms but how long do i need to wait?? what do you do with no money, a mortagage, car and home to pay for?...... apart from going out and doing the same as what has happened to me..to some other unsuspecting vicitm!

Any ideas? anyone?

Chip & Pin. Another bankers con designed to fleece the consumer. They claim there's been a fall in card fraud without telling us that it's because banks can repudiate liabilty more readily. So if they say it didn't happen then as obviously the banks are soooo trustworthy then it musn't have & the consumer is lying.

When are the authorities going to sit up a take notice of the appalling conduct of these establishments

I'd just like to 'chip' my two pennth in.

Isn't it funny how the only companies who aren't using chip and pin are the banks? - Or is it?

I went in to my local branch of Barclays to withdraw some cash, for the first time in a VERY long time, and you have to sign for it - there aren't even any of those pin machines on our side of the glass!!!!

What's good for the goose is absolutely NOT good for the gander!!!!!!

before c&p i had two of the old mag stripe and signature cards. however, my signature was printed onto the cards (and therefore tamper proof). they also contained my photo. yes, it was only b&w but it was a lot better than it not being there. and if they had spent just a very small amount of money making the photo's better they would have been great. they were great cards, i had them for many yrs and i felt really safe with them.

question:

1)
can you still use chip & signature in atm's?
surely you'd still need a pin for those transactions. won't that be a problem when you say that you can't remember your anniversay and other numbers?

2)
isn't saying you can't remember your anniversay a risky business?
if they ever discover your married and yet still living ...

As many suspected & has now been revealed Chip & Pin was/is a massive con perpetrated on the consumer by the banks & the credit card companies.

When will the powers that be realize these organisations are not to be trusted - never I suppose as the politicians & the so called regulators have too much of a vested interest to stop them
