I've sent about six registered mail letters to companies over the last month, and although they were delivered, not one of them was signed for.
What's the point of registered if the postman never asks them to sign? | | | | |

YOU CAN ask for 100x the price of a first class stamp since you paid for a service you never got ..... but having said that since we are dealing with the banks it's best to igore it but dont forget you can ask for a receipt when you pay your £1.18 large size recorded delivery which has a time stamp on it ...... every little edge helps .... | | | | | Re: Registered Mail
The company I work for had to send 5000 legal letters by Recorded Delivery................. ..............3 months later, still no sign of them being delivered. Strange that we were told that our solicitors had been told that it was their fault and the RM never received over 750 of them, yet they've gradually started appearing on their website as 'Delivered'.

I've lost all faith in recorded delivery too. I've lost count of the number I've sent that have gone missing. Some there's no trace of, some arrive and are not traced but I know they've arrived becuase I get a reply from the company I've sent it too. I think some postmen must just treat them as normal mail and not get a signature. When I phone to complain they reckon they have a 98% success rate, but after reading these figures I doubt it... | | | | | Re: Registered Mail
Many posters on CAG have complained of no signature, and to a leser extent, non delivery of registered mail.
What is the best approach for requesting a refund due to either of the above?

"Registered" post hasn't existed for a long long time. You must mean either Recorded or Special Delivery.
If it's Recorded Delivery and you don't get a signature, you can get back the 70p you paid for Recorded Delivery (not 100x a 1st Class stamp as suggested earlier). Either write in, fill in a claim form at the Post Office, submit a complaint online, or ring them up. | | | | | Re: Registered Mail

Whilst I am an advocate of 'doing it out of principle', 70 pence just doesn't seem to warrant the time or effort.

Yes it's correct - in this particular case the item has been delivered, so there is no compensation for non-delivery. However if you paid for a signature to be taken and this didn't happen then you would be entitled to a refund for this part of the service only.
You don't automatically get compensation if you pay for something and you don't get what you paid for. For example if I purchased a widget from XYZ store and it didn't work, I could take it back and obtain a refund but I wouldn't necessarily get any compensation on top of the refund.
It is also worth noting that the Recorded 'Signed For' service is non-contractual. Therefore, you are not entering into a contract of any kind, let alone an unfair one.
(Incidentally, it wouldn't be worth Royal Mail sending you a cheque for 70p, so you will probably find they instead send you a book of stamps worth a few quid. So you will end up better off even though you are still only entitled to the 70p back) | | |

| Its normally a book of 6 first class
I have loads of these, when I was claiming from the bank most of the letters were not signed for or lost. Like it has been said its hardly worth the hassle but if enough people complain they'll realise they have a problem. (which they'll either ignore)

I've often wondered about this as i've helped some friends deal with claims as well and its a pain that loads of the letters sent aren't delivered, now the only thing I can think is that it appears at a PO Box and sometimes it is shown as delivered on the website but you can't get the copy signature which as far as I'm concerned I pay for aswell. | | |

Its not just recorded thats appalling
Due to bad service on Recorded I started sending all mine via Special (expensive, but when we are talking £thousands)
I find that in nearly all cases there is just a squiggle signature with no date, time or printed name (as there is supposed to be)
The above is of course assuming I even get to see the scanned signature, often they just state the scan cant be provided but it has been delivered within the guarantee (oh really? so unless the addressee tells me, how am I supposed to know thats true)
I emailed a complaint about this a month ago, got asked for further details 3 days later (all of which were in the original email) replied and have since heard nothing

I used to work for Royal Mail and I do know that in a lot of cases when you write to a company there cannot be an individual signature for each letter. Some companies we delivered to got in excess of 200 letters a day so no one at the company was going to sit and sign 200 forms on delivery. Therefore all the recorded stickers were put onto a few sheets and then they were signed for collectively. The other problem is that recorded deliverys are scanned as delivered when the postie returns his sheet to the office which can be next day or in some cases the day after that when its his day off or the weekend. The item may have been delivered 48 hours before the scanning is done. I do know that in our office the posties were not always efficient in returning the sheets and on occasions I had sheets handed in for scanning which were several days old. I have even known posties go off on holiday and only hand them in on their fist day back at work.
With special delivery the items are scanned into the office each morning and then 'unless' the postie rings in to say he has got one for which he cant get a signature because no one is in, they are presumed delivered and scanned as such. | | |

glad to have found your forum.
i use recorded delivery quite regularly and find the same problem, namely that delivery confirmation is never on the net for certain addresses. This is particularly unhelpful if the letter was to notify complaints for shoddy service. Obviously the contractor can also look on the royal mal track and trace website and confirm that delivery has not been made, even though he may have the letter in front of him, and thus avoiding to have to response.
Is there an alternative? Has anyone tried a currier or alternative service that they can recommend?
