| | Classic Account Customer | Rats !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! hi
As the title suggests i`m curious to the law regarding the killing of rats (the animal variety not the d.c.a kind)
I know that in some cases rats need to be controlled especially in food factory`s and it seems killing is the only real way tho i am against killing anything. i know of a place where they put out humane traps for the rats, then leave them there for hours while people come and go,looking at them, kicking the cage etc then the guy who sees himself as executioner comes along and drowns them in a bucket of hot water,i see this more as tortured to death than killing and i need a law to quote to get this practice changed.
i know they are rats and most people hate them but if they have to be killed they deserve a quick death and i`m sure whatever law applies to rats also applies to all other so called vermin and some things are classed as vermin that you might not expect ie, any of various small animals or insects that are pests this includes anything that prey`s on game, foxes, squirrels and quite a few birds.it seems the human race isn`t vermin but why i dont know

What are you worried about? |

| | Classic Account Customer | Re: Rats !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! not not really my point its not the killing i`m objecting to its the method your shovel is quick and as i explained previously i`m opposed to killing anything so i have to set them free and that is causing me strife at work so what i`m after is not a judgement on my morals but a method of making them do it properly
its called compassion ie; the humane quality of understanding the suffering of others and wanting to do something about it

In answer to the OPs question, Under the Animal Welfare Act 2006, It is an offence to cause unneccessary suffering to ANY vertebrate animal, which includes rats. So, yes, drowning them in a bucket of hot water is illegal.
However, I believe it is also an offence to set vermin free once they have been caught. |

rats cause diseases. | humane is the quality i`m showing its nothing to do with what i`m showing it to and as i said previously i`m not asking for a debate on my morals or even your lack of i just wanted to know how the law stands and now i do thanx to robin9342,maybe you should stick to important stuff like how old various items in your house are
look at it like this
inspite of my name i`m not really a great fan of cats, they take what they want and if you dont supply it they`ll go elsewhere, they are users, there are lots of them running wild around here,i could argue they are vermin
the local yobs think it is fun to throw them in an open grave in the graveyard and then throw a couple of dogs in,does this mean i should do nothing about it ? of course not
and i didn`t say i wanted to keep them as pets all i want is them to have a quick death, not too much to ask is it,so if your going to comment further read the post properly and try and make it relevant to what i asked, the bear garden is for general chit chat,go there to post your general opinions

| | Classic Account Customer | Re: Rats !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Schrodingers cat- You'll be please to know that I am compassionate to all animals. Whether it be rats or insects or anything.
At a place where I once worked, there was a slightly injured pigeon and facilities asked for someone to kill it. After raising my horror the bird was eventually released into Bushes whereby I felt it had at least another chance.
With regards to the rats, the point of humane traps is to not kill them but release them at another time and location many miles from where they were caught. To as you state they then are not released but put into boiling water is a hideous act and could only be carried out by an individual who has a killing instinct! I would make a formal complaint about this at your workplace demanding action! In fact this must be very distressing for you and your other work collegues though some might not admit to it!
Gilbert's comment "that if he were to catch Aids" should be addressed also as Aids can not be contracted but the virus hiv can which may or may not lead to Aids. |

| | Platinum Account Customer | Re: Rats !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Rats are not a protected species. As I see it you have a few options (i) a rodenticide (usually come as pellets or a drink) , however they mainly act as ani-clotting agents which causes the animial to die from internal bleeding.
(ii) Another way is a rat trap, like the ones used for mice but much bigger. I would avoid catching and releasing since they will only re-appear to cause havoc somewhere else.
Rats are notorious for spreading disease and you may have heard of the bubonic plague? hence the negative rat PR you are seeing here.
If you are a tree-hugger you could always catch and befriend the animal and form a long lasting relationship that this lady seems to have done
Personally I think it would tear your ear off and pass on some terrible disease.........
Anyway, good luck |

Anyway, good luck | Tree hugger ? if that is a person who cares about all things on this planet yes i suppose i am but i have a problem with the name as i do with any typecasting you seem to have the same problem as gilbert,i do not want to befriend the rats tho i do not want them killed but being a realistic tree hugger i can see that you cant have them running round a food factory so they have to be delt with so lets deal with them properly,i let the rat go cos its fate was going to be the same as the previous one`s caught,if something needs to be removed then whatever it is its fate should be as quick and painless as possible and that was not the case
now they shoot the one`s they catch through the head with an air rifle i cant say i`m happy about this but i`m happier than i was,its quick and this has got to be better than the previous arrangement which was nothing less than torture.remember they live in our crap they pick up diseases from our rubbish they flourish because of us
You usually find that people who get pleasure out of torturing animals are the one`s who in later life beat their wives and children
If you really think i am wrong for wanting to reduce the suffering of anything be it human, animal or yes even trees tho i`m not really of the opinion that trees suffer they just make the place look nice not to mention clean our atmosphere then i think you`ve got the problem.i cant for the life of me see how trying to reduce the suffering of anything is wrong

you seem to be a bigot ie a prejudiced person who is intolerant of any opinions differing from his own
not really a good trait in a person

Who mentioned the gays? It was you, so that shows your own opinions!
Get a grip, who on earth wants to befriend a dirty, stinking rat, apart from you and Michael Jackson with his rodent Ben!
Rats should be killed on sight, no ifs or buts. |

S.C | I did not say there was anything wrong with being a tree huger, I would also classify myself as the same. I am an animal lover and would not want any animal to suffer and that is why I offered the advice I did. I have been to rat shows (yes there are pedigree rats out there) and do not have anything against them.
I have read that you are never more than 10 ft away from a rat. Can't remember where I read it but the point was that we are infested with these rodents and they do spread disease, though (as mentioned above) can be companions at the same time. |
