I find Gilbo's comments antagonistic and ridiculous - he'd probably jump a mile if he really saw a rat and as for his cat catching one - you'd be lucky ! How is it he doesn't mind his cat picking up the awful nasty germs from one ? Rats are part of nature - bluebottles are not particularly attractive - nor would I want one as a pet but we'd all be knee deep in s..t without them - everything has a part to play and the less humans interfere the better - nature does it better every time ! The reason we have so many rats is because we are so filthy and wasteful ourselves creating a perfect environment for them to thrive ! I'm for humane - which actually means acting with humanity not attributing humanity to an animal - that would be anthropomorphism ! | My cat is an excellent hunter. Not only that but she actually eats rodents despite being well fed, it is the taste of blood. She brings one back dead or alive on a daily basis almost.
And I deflea my cat each month and my vet has advised me to worm her every 6 weeks, rather than every 12, as she is a hunter cat.
This works a treat to keep her disease free.
I live in the country so my cat brings back all sorts of rodents such as fieldmice, shrews etc and I will pick one up by the tail and throw it over a hedge.
I know what a rat looks like and they will squeal when my cat is playing with them which alerts me.
I can tell you know that I have no hesitation cornering a rat and then splattering it with a shovel.
If you ever live in the country for some time then small rodents are more of everyday life than living in a city.
I fear their disease, not their being.
And you lot are just on a wind up mission to defend a disease bag like a rat. |

In my opinion you need to get a coupla good Patterdales down at your workplace pronto ! That would get shut of your rat problem in a quick and effective way Mind you your workmates would probs get off on that too ! |

There is no offence caused if a cat hunts down these creatures-maybe you should brush up to know what you are talking about.
And a canine would be quite useless to scour an outbuilding's attic-a cat can climb.
And a cat is easier to look after when I spend long periods away, they look after themselves. |

I think some people here are getting confused as to what a rat is
Looks like a mouse,no hair on its tail and usually about a third of the size of your average cat sometimes more and would undoubtedly cause damage to any cat that cornered it tho i doubt any cat would be that stupid thats unless you`ve got a very big cat of course
still butting in on the post with your unwanted opinions i see mr o sullivan, just cant keep away from ripping into us do gooders can you ?
here`s a few definitions of a rat to contemplate,i`d watch out for the third one
rat (n) any of various long-tailed rodents similar to but larger than a mouse
rat (n) someone who works (or provides workers) during a strike
rat (n) a person who is deemed to be despicable or contemptible
the general concensus seems to be against causing as much pain as possible when dealing with the rat infestation

| Maybe it is you sir who should brush up on your knowledge because the question that was originally posted was not "does a cat cause offence when catching vermin" but "what is the most effective humane way of killing vermin" - I put it to you that the most effective way to do this would be to get a bone fide rat catching terrier such as my patterdale into the rat infested place mentioned!
A case in point was billy the terrier a most prolific rat catcher in his day! i would like to see your statistics for how many rats your cat can catch in such a short time!!! Billy's career was crowned on April 22, 1823, when a world record was set with a hundred rats killed in five-and-a-half minutes.
As for dogs climbing i think the likelehood of rats in your attic are minimal as they like to be underground or at least on ground level, also you could always carrier the terrier up, cats cannot be controlled they have a mind of there own! |

Also she roams freely on my estate so she controls and deters any rodent type critter who may be stupid enough to nest on or near my property.
An alsation dog lost an eye to her when it was foolish enough to attack her.
She's nails.
And a rat will much prefer an attic or cavity wall of an outbuilding to nest rather than ground level for safety and warmth-you need to learn a bit more!
And a cat owner cannot be prosecuted for their cat doing a poo or killing protected rodents-unlike a dog owner.
You should get your facts right. |

Rats serve no useful purpose whatsoever and just spread disease.
If every rat on earth was killed I wouldn't even flinch.

| Re: Rats !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! How can some people be so completely heartless?
Humans cause the Earth a lot more trouble than rats ever could, but I don't go drowning people in giant buckets of boiling water.
All Schroedinger is asking for is a decent, clean death for these animals.
I'm sure rats aren't everyone's cup of tea, but no one's asking you to get all snuggly with them - just ensure that they die a reasonably painless death.
Just because something isn't 'cute' (and I think pet rats are, actually), it doesn't mean it doesn't deserve dignity.
To answer your question, Shroedinger, I would urge you to get in touch with the RSPCA - at least there you might be taken as seriously as you should be.

Actually according to research - Rats nest in any safe location near food and water. Outdoors, rats burrow into the ground. Indoors, nesting occurs in double walls, between ceilings and floors, in closed-in areas around worktops, and anywhere rubbish is allowed to accumulate.
It alarms me somewhat the level of rodents you seem to have in and around your "estate" mr o'sullivan i definitely think you must have a pest problem! Also the fact that your Super Cat catches one rodent a day seems irrelevant with regards to a rodent infestation as due to the breeding habits of rodents (The average life span of a rat is 18 months. Young are born about 22 days after mating and mature rapidly. Single females may have as many as 6 litters per year, averaging 6 to 14 young each. By 3 months of age, the young are independent and capable of reproduction. If not controlled, an infestation of rats will rapidly increase.) so obviously they would re infest any establishment before they were extinguished if they used your cat method only to get shut of the critters!
I think you should leave matters of this nature to the experts and carry on stroking your pussy- as for the prosecution of dog owners i think you'll find they can be reprimanded for their dog killing a cat also but definitely not verminl!! |

| Re: Rats !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! nawtynet, my property is surrounded by acres of open greenland and forest (not owned by me!), plenty of room for my cat to hunt and return a rodent.
That is not an infestation problem, it's is nature, and not all the rodents returned are rats.
And a dog owner can be charged for their dog killing vermin, didn't you know it is illegal to kill a fox with dogs??
I don't think you would last long out in the country! |

I don't think you would last long out in the country! | Aaaah so now you refer to the Hunting Act of 2004 where by and i quote "The Hunting Act bans activities that Parliament believed to be cruel sports and permitted activities that it believed to be necessary for land managers. Parliament accepted the view that, where rats and rabbits were pests, hunting them was legitimate."
As you well know Mr O'Sullivan the vermin to which i was referring to was the rat infestation that this whole thread was started for! I think you enjoy going of on tangents of irrelevance and digressing to petty tit for tat arguments that you are incapable of winning!
As for the Country comment, i do in fact live in the country i have horses and dogs and cats and live in acres of land which are in fact my own, i have had rat and mice problems in the past to which i have dealt with quickly and effectively using my terrier- which i think makes me more than qualified to comment on this thread- i regret to say it is doubtful you can say the same! |

I have had horses too and will be getting again once my divorce is finalised. I've never had a vermin infestation as I have always had excellent hunting cats who are the most effecient killing machine of small rodent type critters.
And I don't believe for one minute any country dweller would have sympathy for a rat. |

Maybe you are just lucky to have a wonder cat, my cats seem to be far happier catching birds for some unknown reason! |
