Default Another UK institution sold off ... BT payphones ...

BT payphones are now being run by an American - yes, American - company! Getting into difficulties as the box I used today refused to accept coins and in the display said 'PLEASE INSERT CREDIT CARD' which was pretty odd ... dare I say 'money making?' by not accepting coins but if you want to make a call you've no CHOICE to pay the £1.20 fee for what costs 40p for coins? I digress ...

Moving on ... putting my card in, urgently needing a taxi laden with shopping bags to get home ... after a lot of beeps rapidly tapped out on the phoneline ... making me wonder what the heck was going on ... then, shockingly a recorded American voice saying 'if you want to make a phone call within the UK or from the US ...' which point I slammed the phone down, whipped my card out thinking it had been tampered with and my card was being cloned or debited of all money right then!

Reporting the fault to BT ... eventually getting through to payphones, extremely concerned had been the victim of a scam ... I was informed that as of this Monday BT no longer has the contract on payphones and was being handled by an American company!!

Wonderful! So, no longer 'British Telecom' then really? Don't know if this is now national or just the kiosk I used but sounded pretty nationwide when explained. So, what next - all our phone bills with BT being handled by a US based company??? Oh, the fun we will all have if there's a problem with our bills!

No warning of this happening, never even knew but what ever next??! Our payphones being handled by a US company!!

I can see severe problems if you have a problem with your card or the kiosk doesn't work ... and it's no longer BT's responsibility ... trying to contact them!!

Thought to mention this as you could knock me down with a feather after finding this out purely by accident today!

It is an unfortunate problem of the "mobile phone society", we don't use payphones anymore and they have been disappearing more and more from streets around the UK.

It's just life, surely?

When I cross the Severn Bridge to go home I am on a UK motorway but I have to pay the French to use it, should I stop at the services I pay Germans and I then get home to my abode where I am paying my mortgage to a load of Americans!
