The term "bill of sale" can be misleading. In the context your are describing, it will almost certainly have been a document given for security for a loan, so that while the title to the goods will have been transferred to the trustees, the person signing the bill will have retained the goods in his possession and had a right to have the title assigned back to him upon repayment of the loan. Since it was discovered that he did not in fact own the goods, the bill of sale was worthless as a security (but not as evidence of the loan) and so proceeding to register it pointless.

It is difficult to comment on your case without knowing the full facts and the application of the Limitation Act 1980 will be complicated (a) if there is fraud and (b) because the normal rules do not operate in certain circumstances where trust property is concerned. You also have the problem that it all happened 30 years ago and it will be difficult to unravel the facts.

It is not surprising that the London Law Agency does not have a record as their role was purely administrative. It would not be normal for a solicitor to keep any file for more than 30 years and in many cases for rather shorter periods.

Fraud is difficult to prove as the standard of proof is high. As I said above, you are not helped by the time lapse.

There may be a claim against the trustess if they acted in a reckless manner, but again time is likely to be against you.
