Hi, I was wondering... Can a double glazed window break just by knocking on it. As recently I was locked out of my flat and I was banging on the window to let my partner know I was locked out, the outerpane broke and the inner pane kept intact. The housing association say that I "Deliberately" broke my own window and want me cough up for the money to get it repaired. Could I use the excuse that the window was faulty as a reason not to pay for this window.
I also found that the association have buildings insurance that they usually use to cover the cost of breakages, but they advise that they are inforcing recharging for damages to their tenants more now.
Any advice would be a godsend... thanks.  |

It shouldn't, no, not by just knocking on it. I've had morons throwing rocks at mine, and they haven't even got a mark on.
The problem, though, is that if that's the case, the HA should pursue the double-glazing company, and I doubt that they'll make the effort.
My suggestion would be a letter to say: "Look, I didn't deliberately break it, I was knocking on it, not even strongly, and it broke, there's obviously a safety issue there, youneed to do somethign about it".
Do they want the money upfront for fixing it? If not, it might be worth considering gettign them to fix it, then not pay and say that if they want the money, they'll have to go to court for it, as they'll have to prove you deliberately broke it.
I suggest doing a bit of research on Google in the meantime about resistance and so on to support your assertion that tapping on the window shouldn't be enough to break it.
I had a Zenith guy round a few weeks ago, and he was showing us that you could stand and jump on their double glazing and it wouldn't break.

Yes, I've heard about their aggressive sales techniques... 
"Our" salesman was lovely, though, used to call me sweetie and lover when I had to call the office. And him 1/2 my age an' all, . And he got a CAG card from me, so: Hi *waves*, Brad, if you read this! 
Mind you, I had made it very clear that my tel no was not for use by their marketing people!!! | |
