Hi all

Just a quicky bought a sofa in Dec 2000 and purchased extended warranty with it. This covered me for 5 years. If no claim was made in the 5 years then I would get the whole premium back. Just one thing - as long as I claimed it back within 21 days of the 5 years being up. Totally forgot about this and I'm now nearly 10 months late! Where do I stand???????

Hate to say, but I think you've no recourse for that.

You bought a service, and even though you made no claim you had the insurance for five years. The premium refund was essentially a bonus, and if there were terms attached to it and you miss them, then you lose out on the refund.

The companies offering these moneyback warranties know that most people will forget to claim - that is the only way they can make money.

Some years ago my mum bought a fridge/freezer. My mum was offered a two year guarantee (no cashback) or a five-year guarantee (with cashback). Mum died before the five year period was up but I submitted a claim on the very day of the fifth anniversary and the money was added to the monies for probate purposes.
