Default tax credit overpayment

I recenlty went into a thread which had a template for a letter to send regarding the IR claiming back overpaid tax credits.
My ex and I recenlty received a request for £545 which dates back to 2003/04. We had allways given all information as requested correctly and the mistake was ientirely on their part. We received 2 letters recenlty and have called to say we felt this was wrong. The person on the other end basically agreed with us he felt it was wrong too, but his job was to ask how much we were prepared to offer to pay. We advised nothing as disputing this.
So any help would be appreciated.

Tax credits are the worse, i even went to a tribunal about mine and lost, as many do and now i am paying it back monthly. I did what they told me to do, informed them about circumstances every step of the way and then 6 months down the line while i was still waiting for them to award childcare fees i recieved a letter stating that i owed them over £1500. Not the fact that i was in debt with my daughters nursery and about to be evicted as my wages weren't covering my outgoings.

You are gonna have to get serious, i had a great solicitor who dealt with everything upto the tribunal as legal didn't cover her attendance to that. I wish i had the money at the time to pay for her to attend myself as i think i would have won my case.

Good luck with yours, hope it turns out better than mine.

Smile Re: tax credit overpayment

we were overpayed £3500.00 in the same period over the space of 4 months, we had filled in the forms correctly and sent in all the appropriate documents with the claim pack, i received a letter saying £2000 ish had been paid into our acc and that a further payment of £764 would be paid in four wekly well my overdraft ate most of that! i contacted them and said as lovely as all this money is was it correct? i was told the computer had miss read my forms and had put the joint claim in as 74 hours a week between us but that we did not get a wage! i would love to have been in the position to have done all that supposed voluntary work i certainly would not be claiming tax credits if that were the caes , anyway the woman assured me that she would make notes on the screen a re calculuate our claim, then four weeks later the £764 went in again i contacted them and went through the whole story again! this lady however told me i would need to put it in writing, i did this heard nothing again £764 went in the next month. when it came to paying the money back i wrote a huge long appeals letter and a few weeks later got a reply they had wiped my slate clean as it was entirely there fault!!!! don't give up appeal to my knowledge this was the year for mammoth overpayments and hundredsof people have won through appeal good luck
