My parents bought a Kenwood Chef about two years ago. Yesterday the drive motor sheared off, leaving the machine unusable.

This is approx £400 worth of kit bought because it was semi professional, and has been used nearly every other day as Mum is disabled and has difficulty using her left hand.

Before I start ringing Mr Wood - does Sale of Goods act apply here, I wouldnt have expected damage like that to appear until at least 5-6 years down the line?

Any advice/comments?

I think that someone like bookie is best to advise, but I would say so.

If you pay that much for a mixer, when much cheaper models are available, you would expect it to last a long time.

you are right in an item being expected to last a reasonable length of time time but what that is is a matter of fact.

you have stated it is a semi-professional model and cost £400. that would indicate it would be expected to last a good deal of time. However, you also state it has been used everyday, which would lessen the expectation of durability. If you made this fact known when bought then that would count towards your claim.

I cant say whether this particular item should last x amount of years - maybe a kitchen diva could advise. But I am sure that a letter to the manufacturer or seller (who it should be but is less likely to be co-operative) explaining the situation would help.

You need to quote s. 14 of SoGA and also, if you made known the needs of your mother, s. 13 of the same Act.

Have you spoken to Kenwood to see if they are willing to at least repair it, which I think, would be more than reasonable of them. When you bought the item, did it say that it was a professional model, or is that just your assessment because of the price?
