Arrow Do you get sales or telemarketing calls?

If so, I wanted to let you know about a website that I created EveryCall.us. You can search for and report telemarketers, fraudulent and any other call that you receive by telephone number that shows on your caller id.

I am new to this forum and hope this site can help those of you who like me, get hundreds of these calls from automated dialers every month!

Does it operate in the UK everycall? Looks like an American and Canadian thing.

I'm registered with the Telephone Preference Service which prevents you getting calls anyway? TPS Registration

The website operates worldwide, telephone calls can be reported from just about any Country. In fact already there are hundreds of telephone reports from the UK, India, and Australia.

With regards to the TPS, that is similar to the US Do Not Call list, and I have been registered on it since it was created. However, I still get telemarketing calls, many of which are from scammers or fraudulent callers anyhow who aren't going to respect the do not call lists anyhow.

Let me know if I can answer any other questions. Thank you!

In the UK, if you are TPS registered and ex-directory, the amount of calls you will get will be minimal, but I would say that prevention is still the best policy: systematically tick or untick the box which allows (whoever you're dealing with) to pass on your details to "carefully selected" offers from "partners" etc...

The calls one still occasionally gets are from call centres in India which thereby manage to bypass the TPS. However, mention that you are TPS registered and they hang up the phone really quickly before you can ask them the name and address of the UK company they are calling from.

there is also a website called whocallsme. People can (without registering) enter a telephone number and find if others have received such calls. You are also free to leave comments. Quite handy!

So you have to get their details and how they got your number before you tell them about the tps

For the rest of the uk companies that don't give a **** there's a letter that you can download from the information commissioner's website instructing a company to stop processing your information for direct marketing. Sent 2 so far, one to the bank and one to tiscali who didn't understand that no to marketing on my profile meant no phone calls, no matter how wonderful their offers are ...

Oooh, could you post the link here? Might come in handy for some.

One of my bearbugs is Virgin Media, who, despite the fact that I am ex-directory, TPS registered, pay them extra so that switchboard-type numbers don't get through, STILL think that it is ok for THEM to phone me even though I have explicitly told them that I give them no such permission. Our contract is for me to pay and for them to provide me the line and number, but where does it say that that gives them the right to call me simply because they know that number? Did I give them my phone number with permission to call? Er, NO. So stop calling!

The Information Commissioner's info on marketing calls & the "don't do it again" letter is

http://www.ico.gov.uk/upload/documen..._materials.pdf

Must admit, when I emailed this to tiscali (with name & address as part of the letter) they emailed back saying that because of the Data Protection Act they needed 3 items of info, including name, address & email address!! Not the brightest bunch!! Apparently they meant company procedures require the third item (account no was an alternative) so that they can find your account! Date of birth was also in their list, not sure how they would have coped if I had sent that!

Sounds as though Tiscali are learning from Virgin

The bit I particularly like in the leaflet is

Quote:

WHAT MUST A DATA CONTROLLER DO WHEN HE RECEIVES SUCH A NOTICE?
A data controller must comply with your request as soon as possible. There are no exceptions to this.
It's so unambiguous

It also goes on to tell you what you can do if you are contacted again.

It's almost enough to make you look forwards to the next marketting call!
