Default Lowell portfolio I/Red debt collection services

Hello all after reading about various similar cases related to the above i decided to register and post this on the forums in the hope that i could be given some advice specific to my case.I firstly received a letter out of the blue from Lowell asking if i lived at a particular address no dates or what it was concerning were mentioned ( i did reside at the address some 8-9 years ago ). I did some rooting around on the net to find out who these people were and my suspicions were confirmed,i elected not to contact them via the phone and decided to sit tight & see what would transpire next.
Anyway i received another letter a few weeks later from Red debt who we all know are part of the lowell group, this time it stated that they had taken on the debt & it lists who the original creditor was (high st bank) & the amount (under £2000). Now here's the true part i did owe this money but fell into dispute with the bank over admin fees imposed for late payments etc, so out of principle i refused to pay it back and left the bank and the rest is history. I couldn't get credit a while later so i obtained a credit report from experian there were other debts on there which i cleared and i have recently been able to get credit on a range of consumables solely in my name.
This debt to the bank was not listed on the report, is this due to the time frame 8 years/statute barred? or could it be possible that experian don't hold the info. What should i do next as i did owe this money even though its 8-9 years ago any advice would be greatly appreciated, thanks in advance bigted.

Hi Bigted,
unless you have aknowledged this debt or made a payment towards it within the last six years this debt would now be statute barred. Lowells etc try the odd fishing trip to try and find people who have no knowledge of their rights etc I would be inclined to ignore any further correspondence from them or you could fire off one of the template letters re Statute Barred to them.

Thanks for your post falcon whats your opinion on how this could effect my credit . Should i get reports from all the big groups just to see if it unearths anything unusual as i have only had one from experian and that was a few years ago now, thanks bigted.

Lowells buy debts in bulk I believe, so some they get are statute barred, they try it on to try and recover something of the debt and they do on occasion I believe contact the CRA's and have a default etc placed on files, however, if this is a statute barred debt this should not be done and if they have you have a right to have it removed immediately. I would check your credit file and if nothing is showing in relation to this I would leave well alone
