Exhibition Cancellation Fees

Hi

I was wondering if anyone knew whether exhibition event organisers were legally entitled to charge you up to 70% of the cost of exhibition if you cancelled prior to the event?

I run a business and have been hit twice with paying 70% cancellation fees even though i have not attended the event. It seems crazy, they sign you up a year in advance, then due to simple cash flow problems you explain you cant afford it so have to withdraw, then they hit you with the fees.

Any thoughts?

What sort of notice are you giving? a month or two?

Well... in the past I have been a major event organiser and I've been in the position of having to charge people who cancel. Anything up to 2 months on a sliding scale but if we managed to sell the space on again then we just forgot about it.

I would think your argument is whether or not they have been out of pocket for you cancelling... for instance... if you had a designated space at an event but couldn't go, and they couldn't re-sell that space to anyone else, then yes I would say you should pay (bear in mind I was on the other side and that income is essential to the running of the event), but if the space has been resold then there's no reason for them to charge anything.
