Default 1996 renault clio problems any help?

Year of vehicle - 1996
Make of vehicle
- renault
Model of vehicle - Clio
Engine size - 1.4
Mileage/Kilometers - 100,000+

Ok i pulled up a T'juction , and from neurtal ( rolled there like you do), put it into first, brang up the clutch and a little gas to move, but nothing!, so after a getting it back to my house, i inspected the gear's and the clutch, the clutch moves in and out (on the pedal) like normal, and the gears go into gear, but when the egnie is running, and i try and put it into gear, it would normally make a grinding noise, and bump it out, it doesnt do this, it lets it go into gear, with out the clutch pushed down, and no noise. i removed the linkage at the bottom of the car, and push it into gear that way, it goes into gear, and seems fine to me. i am compelety lost for idears, so please if any 1 has any knowagle please help me, also the clutch makes a kinda like air leaking noise, wen i push it in, and then relase it?? help!

thanks for your time

Law.

It sounds like the clutch has gone to meet his maker. 100,000 is a pretty good life for a small car clutch.

A car will normally go into gear without even using the clutch if the engine isn't running as there are no moving parts to grind together.

I agree with Conniff that it sounds like the clutch is knackered and needs replacing. A good indicator of this is the bite point on the pedal. If it's right at the top of the pedal travel then it's almost sure to be worn out.

Have a shop around before you get it done though and be warned - the clutch on my 2002 Laguna set me back just short of £600

No, just the gearbox. But unless you have a garage alonside the house, and know what you are doing, I wouldn't recommend you try. Haynes manual wont be enough assistance if you have no idea what you are doing.

You will need to drop the nearside subframe out (it can be done without but it's hard work) but as with all front wheel drive cars you would be better off taking it to a garage.

It might also be worth looking at the cable as they have a tendancy to stretch.

Sorry lawrinse, but if you don't even know what the gearbox looks like then you are certainly not experienced or equiped enough to do it.

It is a big job including the removal of driveshafts and suspension.

No, ring a couple of places and see how much it will cost them to do it.

If the bill is for say £300, and you like the car, then you will have to decide if the car is worth the bill.

Have a look around and see what you can buy for however much you are quoted to replace the clutch, you can't get much for 3 or 400, then decide if you want to scrap it.

A quick search tells me that you should be able to get a full kit for about £50. All you have to do then is get a friendly local mechanic to fit it for you and job done for about £200 or so.

I'm agreeing with Conniff again though. DO NOT ATTEMPT TO DO THIS YOURSELF AS YOU WILL END UP WITH A CAR THAT WILL NEVER WORK AGAIN!

From what you have said so far it doesn't sound like a scrap the car job as long as everything else is working well.

I'd seriously consider whether it is worth replacing the clutch if you're running into hundreds of pounds, you're going to be spending more on the car than it's actual value.

I just looked on ebay for an idea of the price. There's plenty about at reasonable prices. If you google search renault clio clutch it will lead you to loads of mail order suppliers.

You need a 3 part kit - that's disc, plate and bearing.

Good luck!
