Default Repairs

OK, heres the situation.
Ive got a home cinema amplifier that has developed a fault. This fault has occured after several years of use and so it is reasonable for me to bear the costs of repair.

However the problem arrises here, I contacted the manufacturer who said send it back to them through an authorised agent. So I took it to the nearest agent who informed me that there would be a charge for postage and packing. So I paid that charge and the amp was sent off to the manufacturer.
After several weeks I phoned the agent to find out what was happening. I was told manufacturer had a look and wanted to charge 800 pounds to fix it. There was no written quotation from the manufacturer nor a breakdown of how this cost arrises.
I requested that the amp be sent back to me as I thought those charges were excessive. Now when I went to collect the amp I was told there was an additional charge from the manufacturer having to look at the product. I pressed further and said if there was a manufacturer charge then surley a written report on the fault should be supplied. After pressing further the agent changed his story and said the charge was for insurance and handling.
Now my questions are as follows:

Am I expected to pay the additional handling charge?

As far as Im concerned Ive already paid for the posting and packaging and there was no mention of a further charge.

Does the manufacturer have to supply me with a written quotation breaking down how the 800 pound charge is calculated?

Upon further request of defining what the actual fault is the agent informed me that the manufacturer wanted 100pounds to include a written report defining what the fault is? Is this legal?

Thanks for your help

Default Re: Repairs

Ring the manufacturer direct and ask him about the fault and cost of repairs and also the return postage charges.
