Question Laptop fault

Hi all,

wonder if anyone can help before I get started on a path..........

Bought a laptop from an online retailer (own brand) almost 2 years ago at £1500

Laptop screen is now very dull but brightens if the screen is moved on its hinge (as if to partially close/open further).

Laptop came with 1 year retailer warranty, but even at this point am I in a position to demand a repair without having to pay for anything?

I was under the impressions the product had to be fit for purpose "for a reasonable amount of time" and that time is normally guaged by the cost of the item (e.g: £399 laptop goes after 2 years = iffy, £1500 laptop = good case?)

Any assistance greatly received

(please note I'm about to go on hols from tmw eve <thurs 29th june> for 1 week so not being ignorant if I dont reply to your reply immediately!)

You should defiantely approach them under the sale of goods act esp as you paid that kind of money for it, the fault you describe is generally an easy fix and sounds like a fractured cable to the backlight quite common with laptops where the cable goes from the board under the keyboard to the screen and it fractures due to the stress of being opened and closed.

If they dont/wont fix it should cost no more than £75 to get fixed including the part and labour

Again I think £600 you should be able to state that it should last longer than 14 months did you buy it locally?

Hi folks,

just got back from the hols ...................

Everyones thoughts seem to be similar to mine, so I'm going to write off and ask

If it is however just £75 I'd be happy paying that if it comes to it

Cheers for your time

No offence, but isn't it illegal to take out a policy with a company and then claim for a fault that was indeed present and known about before the policy was taken out.

I am not saying HusbandKhan is right or wrong but on this website there are loads of threads on what is right and what it wrong. I.E people trying to get out of paying debts by writing to companies and asking for credit agreements and if they cant produce it then the debt is no longer enforceable as just a point, i am sure there are many more.

What i will say is though is how many times has insurance companies ripped people off? You try and make a legal claim on things and they come out with some backdoor exit for themselves to save themselve from paying out. I.E like your car gets broken into and you have a laptop behind your seat the insurance company say was the car locked you say yes then they say was it in a locked glovebox or locked boot you say no they dont pay out. So it has to be in locked car in a locked compartment. Or when you set your insurance up with the company and they go through the questions about alarms and that and they ask you do you have key operated windows you say yes, then you go away on holiday, you get broken into and they jammy the window open and when you try and claim they say well did you not phiscally lock them with the key even though they are closed and you say no and they dont pay out.

Again not that i am saying it is right or wrong but how many people have had things broken I.E like televisions or Laptops or Cameras and so forth that finally broke due to wear and tear and would not be paid out on the insurance so dropped it and then claimed off the insurance?

That is my take and i know some people might dissagree with that and i know two wrongs do not make a right.

What people do on their own account is entirely up to them.

But to remain a credible resource, we can NOT condone suggestions, on this forum, that anyone breaks the law.

If it is allowed to go unchallenged then the forum itself is suggesting it.
All the methods advocated on this site use the law and stay within the law.

To follow any other course would leave us open to criticism and ridicule and would certainly not serve our 80,000 plus members in any positive way.
