I think it sounds fair enough about doing a free re-test only if they do the repairs to be honest.
Of course, it may be that they're charging too much for the work (or even for work that doesn't need doing). You could phone a few garages for a quote on the work to see if it's a reasonable price - depends how much time you have I suppose.
moneysavingexpert recommends using council MOT stations as they have no vested interest in getting you to have work done. No help to you at the moment, I know.

I can get it done for £80 instead of £230

Now, the problem is i will have to pay for another MOT if i take it away to be fixed elsewhere...

How much does an MOT nowadays? Surely not £150, so either way, you'd be quids in if you do it elsewhere!

It checked the parts and I know about the windscreen wiper, I never had problems with it, but I dont mind about that 1...

Its the fact they want so much money, as another garage quoted £80.

Shame i dont know anyone in the industry who could fit it for me, and save £60

PS I am a girl.... I know about cars, but not the mechanics of them!

Lol...

its okay honest, wasn't offended! Hey the "im a girl trick" works really well!

I know about cars more than the usual, but my job is to look after kids, cook, clean, wash, iron, hoover, dust, and get my bank charges back for me and the OH!

When its car time i just pass the buck to OH and hes more useless than me!

Someone told OH today that the place we took it are scam artists....

It might be helpful to visit VOSA's website. They have all the rules for re-test fees and other helpful information. And as it's part of the government, usually has the most up to date information.

Okay, so i had my retest with the new garage, they replaced the strut top bearing and wipers, and took it for its MOT, well it failed again....

The Brake cable has a big bulge in it, and needed replacing.

The guy charged us £120 in total, which was half the price of the other garage.

He said if I had breaked really hard, it could have broken and I would have crashed. Im disgusted the 1st MOT didnt pick this up...I want to take action on them!!!!! How can I? I mean if i had had my children in the car with me we could have all died due to their incompetance!!!!!

Anyone got any suggestions? I havent called the 1st garage to vent my anger, but I really want too!!!!

Yeah but I totally empathise with Lou over her frustration - she's had to pay twice now, so it's no wonder. This new thing about having to do a complete re-test rather than the failed bit, is stupid: obviously this is yet another government money making scheme...

Sticks head in a noose HI lueeze

Are you sure they said brake cable???? you see the car has hydraulic brakes and the "brake cable" would be a handbrake cable so therefore it would not be a safety issue for you on normal driving.

If the Brake pipe was at fault then there are two issues here is the second garage trying it on or did the first one miss it? Do you have the old part? if so go back to the first garage and say hey look you missed this what are you going to do about my retest fee I paid this other garage.

before i reply further will await your reply

Hi Lueeze, did you get a bill from the second garage saying they replaced the brakepipe or would they write a letter saying that they had replaced it and that they would back you up if need be ( its always worth asking) if you have a letter or bill and the original failure sheet go back to the first garage and ask them for the fee for the mot back as its quite obvious they did not carry it out properely ...if they refuse ask them for the adress of the local vosa office as you want to make a complaint .........no doubt you will get your money back ...if not contact them ........they wont like the garage trust me !!!!!!!!!!!!
