It could be the thrust bearing making that sound (gets worse just as the gear is engageing). The only other thing I could suggest is to check the belts and tensioners. If one is slightly slack it could be slipping causing a squeek. If you are having trouble starting check the alternator belt.

Cool Re: stange occurances when trying to start 03 monddeo

hi dude
the belts were the first thing on my check list and are plenty tight enough, the problem is very temperamental. ie it ha run for 5 days without a splutter then laqst night went to start it to get my wife and nothing , on first attempt, second attempt drew a bit of attention as it sounded like a gear change without use of the clutch and on the third try spot on again. i the ran it for the raest of the night shopping so plenty engine off engine on and it was fine.
so the ghost continues to haunt me , and i say me cos it aint happened to my better half.
the noise from the bearing is only audible in the cab when i hold the car using the clutch or half have it depressed just as we sit at lights etc.
but i will check them again
thanks

party on dude
