Angry petrol stations

How many of you have been to your local petrol station and put say £10 in and found that when you have finished, and put the pump back the amount is £10.01.this happened to us and people have got very angry, the cashier use to say that it would get sorted, but never did so i reported it to oft in our area, after a couple of days we went in and put £10 of petrol and thats the amount we pay, sorted our petrol station out but now realise quite a few our doing this scam in our area.all those people losing a penny means stations our making a nice earner out of us, Be warned it could be your petrol station ripping you off.

Biggest problem that I find is where you get one pump unit serving two people on opposite sides of the island.
You are just inching up to the round figure, when the person on the other side stops delivery. You then get a sudden burst of pressure that delivers the extra 1 or 2 pence-worth on your side.

I don't think this is a scam. Petrol counter go around so fast now that it is difficult to stop on an exact amount.
Also these pumps are strictly monitored and calibrated by Trading Standards, so I don't think it is a fiddle, just bad luck.

As Conniff has said, it's just bad luck.

The calibration cannot be out by more than 25ml on a 20 litre pour (that's 5 teaspoons). There may be an occasion when the amount does go up and you have received no fuel, this normally happens at the start of a delivery and is called creeping in the trade . The meters VERY rarely add 1p at the end of a delivery. Also, don't blame us engineers for the rising prices, it's nothing to do with us, I just fix the pumps

I've had a local Texaco pump suddenly jump up by 1p after the nossle was back in it's holder. That was on a £20 deisel delivery. Just gave the cashier a £20 note and walked off. The cashier didn't say anything.

@havinastella: Forgive me for saying this as you sound like you know what you're talking about, but your statement is a bit contradictory. Are you saying there is a real problem with overcharging caused by 'creep'?

Oh no.

This only normally happens if the pump hasn,t been used for some time (days if not weeks) so normally commercial sites, not retail. It can also occur if the tank runs dry (will never happen on a retail site)

Trading standards (weights and measures) are the toughest I have seen in any industry.

'Creeping' can also occur if the hose length is over 12ft and the pump software does not have anti dialation software, but again due to W&M, this is extremely rare and often an oversite.
