Default overpayment

Hi there can anyone make sense of this, when i got my payslip this morning it said overpayment in one line and the amount deducted?? no explanation of why, no phone call to say they were going to do it, and no letter of explanation. Is this normal process or should they have notified me of there intensions, what are my rights? have they broken any employment laws? and how should i approach this matter, ok if i have been overpaid ( which i doubt) fair enough pay it back but i think this is a bit underhand.

I think it's called an Unlawful Deduction, you should have been notified in advance.

The law protects you from having unauthorised deductions made from your wages, including complete non-payment. This protection applies both to employees and to some self-employed workers.

There are extra protections for individuals in retail work that make it illegal for an employer to deduct more than 10 per cent from the gross amount of any payment of wages (except the final payment on termination of employment) if the deduction is made because of cash shortages or stock deficiencies.

Workers who believe they have suffered an unlawful deduction from wages can make a complaint to an employment tribunal.

And if you have been overpaid they cannot just deduct it without your agreement on how it is to be repaid; if a large sum usually in installments.

update: spoke to wages dept the girl said she was told to deduct that amount by her boss, so i asked who had authorised it she said must have been my line manager, so spoke to him he said that was untrue as he had signed my time sheet to go through as normal but would have a word with wages, told it would be repaid next week we shall see
