Joy of joys - the banking bully boss has been moved sideways so he can be off no harm to anyone!!!

Now here is where it gets a tad complicated! Mr SF was informed that the job would be downgraded to a supervisory role and when internally advertised it would have the phrase "a preferred candidate has ben identified". Anywhooose it did not! Bless HR. He had his interview today and essentially the job is the same as the managers job as was without the direct control of budget and only contributions to appraisals and recruitment, with that increasing over the next 12 months.

I do know and understand why they have done this, as they want to get Mr SF into management, he is very young (33).

He went for the same job two years ago, and very narrowly missed out on getting it, any one in HR would cringe at the reasons why - "with his life changing so fundamently (as he was getting married) they felt that it would be too much stress to take on a managerial role"

So my questions are these:

I think that it would be beneficial to his standing within the company that he strives to have the job titled changed to Assistant Manager rather than Supervisor. He deals with hundred of thousands pounds worth of contracts. (Dont get me wrong I think job titles are a load of twaddle but it is an industry where they are important.)

He gets a specific timeline of achievements to attain with in the next 24 months to then have his post upgraded again to Manager.

What do you think he should strive to get out of the negociations? I have said to him that if he was working for another company then he would have every right to negociate just becuase he has been there 17 years does not mean he should jsut be grateful IYSWIM!

SFx

Thanks

Sorry I feel as if I have come in half way through, so apologies for that.

Not to sure about "a preferred candidate has been identified" and how this would stand re equal opportunities, also don't really see the point of advertising.

What sort of business is this, as you feel that 33 is young to be a manager.

As for the title, well titles certainly at the lower level only mean something within that company, e.g. a supervisor in one company may be the equivalent of an assistant manager, or manager in another, or possibly lower, I've interviewed "Sales Managers" that ended up having no staff.

Will his responsibilities, status and, or more importantly his terms change, otherwise as you said "job titles are a load of twaddle".

If he is intending to leave, then another company will be more interested in what, or who he knows, what he can do or bring.

As he has worked there since he left school, I don't imagine he is thinking of leaving, and probably feels he deserves the title, therefore if he's there for the long term what is another two years, if this time they have virtually guaranteed it provided the targets are achievable.

What sort of business is this, as you feel that 33 is young to be a manager. He works for a major construction equipment company technical enginerring and specifiacatons

Will his responsibilities, status and, or more importantly his terms change, otherwise as you said "job titles are a load of twaddle". yes they will

If he is intending to leave, then another company will be more interested in what, or who he knows, what he can do or bring. it is a very small business and his very respected within it, I think many would like him to leave but I dont think that will happen!

There is no problem with another two years, however, he was extremely close to getting the managers job 18 months ago, he will effectively be doing the managers job bar disciplinary and budget control. I appreciated that they want to build his sills but dont want it to be getting someone to do the job for less money and status within the industry.

Thanks for you reply.
