Applying For Promotion While On Sick Leave

I have been signed off sick from work for two months now and will be off for another few weeks at least. However I have heard that a promotion opportunity has arisen at work for which I would like to apply. Am I entitled to apply while off work - or is my employer entitled to refuse to consider my application? Would applying for promotion constitute being "involved " in workplace activity while being signed off? My line manager would need to approve my application and can only do this if I contact her. The interviews will probably be after I return.

In my opinion, and I'm not an expert, I don't see why it should be a problem.
After all, all it needs is a telephone call to register your interest. Any paperwork involved (application forms) could be sent to you for completion, after which you post them back.
Enclose a note to remind them that you are off sick until ((?)) but you would be able to attend any interview upon your return.

The only problem I can think of may be that I requested some refresher training in my current post prior to returning. Employer might say this makes me not suitable for promotion anyway.

Been with company 5 years, but was working for a different section for one year to my old section in which the promotion opportunity has arisen.

I was on secondment for a year until the day before I returned to my old post in the section where the promotion opp. as arisen. It was then that I went off sick.

Hi, there is nothing at all to stop you applying for another position within the company while off sick - you are an employee after all.

If you feel you meet the criteria and are confident you are able to do the job, then it would be a shame not to apply don't you think?
