this might sound dumb but what is a CHAPS transfere????

Clearing
House
Automated
Payment
System
All big banks are members of a clearing house in order to process its payments, it is an almost instant bank transfer, takes about 15 minutes from the orginator to receiptiant receiving the funds. Some banks charge for this about 35 quid.
But even the smaller banks and building societies can do these payments has most of them use one of the big banks for clearing payments.
Only main difference is a BACS Giro transfer (The standard) takes upto 3 days and is free, but a CHAPS/SWIFT/IBAN transfer usually incurrs a small charge and of course which the bank passes on to the customer sending.
But as sidewinder says, demand a CHAPS payment, you are totally entitled to it, and like you say you still have a life to lead and bills to pay and family to look after, also ensure any bank charges you've incurred because of this late payment is taken care of by your former employer.
And don't let them tell you it isn't possible, as every employer who pays via BACS Giro have access to CHAPS and able to make those payments using the payroll system, just usually requires someone more senior to authorise it.
