Payroll experts :) Where do I get my P60?

Hi again all,

I changed jobs back on the 31st of March of this year. Obviously the tax year does not end until the 6th(?) of April, and so I was employed with my new employer for around a week. I have been told by my current employer, when enquiring about where my P60 was that "even though you were employed by us in the old tax year, because we didnt pay you until 30th of April, which is the new tax year, your old employer will have to supply you your P60".

Is this right? This strikes me as odd, because obviously any P60 coming from my old employer will presumably have no information regarding the "missing days" 31st of March-6th April.

If it is the old employer, is there any way I can "force" them to provide, or can I get the P60 directly from the tax office? Just due to the way the old employer operates, I have suspicions that repeated requests will go unheeded.....

Hi, yes the new employer is right. The last date you were paid in the 07/08 tax year was 31 March - tax year actually ends on 5 April - so they would not have used any of your previous year's information to calculate your salary at the end of April. You should have received your P60 by now - I think the absolute deadline is 31 May. You have a legal right to receive your P60 so I would suggest that a call to the tax office might help.

There are no 'missing days' as such as the tax is calculated on the date the payment is made, so if you worked for your new employer from 1 April to 30 April then that payment is definitely in the 2008/09 tax year.

Now just to force them to supply - I've already emailed my old employer once about it....

Out of interest, what do I need my P60 for? Is there any real need for it?

Well only if you need to provide proof of income for that year to anyone. Otherwise not really, just another piece of paper to file away.
