Default Male staff being paid more per hour

My daughter works in the beauty therapy industry where she has recently learned that male staff receive a higher hourly rate of pay than the females. I know that when this happened in the NHS there was a great fuss and numerous staff received huge sums in back pay because it was deemed illegal.

Does this apply to the private sector and what avenue would she take to report it. She has previously made a comment to her supervisor regarding her salary and basically been told if you don't like it - leave.

She is only 19 and in her first proper job and quite nervous about doing anything,

Any info or advice would be appreciated
Many thanks
Michelle

Just to clarify, are you saying that all male staff get paid more than the female staff, or is this just one particular individual? If it's just one person the pay differentiation may have nothing to do with gender.

Also, being 19 she does not yet qualify for the Minimum Wage. Are the male staff over 21? If so then that could account for the difference.

True - I should have stated that the Minimum Wage for those under 21 is lower than for those over 21 - "She does not yet qualify for the full minimum wage"

Thanks Pat!

Ok, thanks for all those I believe he is not over 21 and it isn't a minimum wage issue and that there are major problems with salaries as a whole. Again, I believe he recieves a higher salary than female staff (within the same job) can't answer for all the male staff employed in the company as there are many different jobs within a hotel and this is specific to beauty therapy/massage staff who are employed to do the same job
cheers
Michelle
