If you retain a print of the dated screen error message saying card missing, and collect together Egg responses and admissions in writing or in email, proving that the palaver was down to them not you, I cannot see a cat in hell's chance how Egg can penalise you for their own maladministration.

If anything they ought to give full refund plus compensation for your time and trouble, if the error was provable all down to them. Regulators like the OFT and the FOS are there to see that tinpot institutions do not arrogate to themselves the powers of the government.

If you were sent a new card which required an act of notification from you to activate it upon receipt, and this were not done, then I cannot understand how an unactivated card was permitted to receive debit spending which in turn now requires minimum monthly pay-in. Either the card was activated requiring minimum payment, or it was not activated and no spending would have been accepted.
