Default Registering an Irish (Republic) Van over 10 years old

I wonder if anyone can help.
I have to register an Irish Van that was 10 years old in September and need to know how to do it.
The advice on the Dep for Transport site is not very helpful, but just states that you need an MOT Certificate. I know that you also need an Insurance Certificate (expensive and awkward) if the vehicle is under 10 years old and Type Approval. I don't think you need Type Approval once the vehicle is over 10 years old, but what about the Insurance?
I know it's not a complaint, but I thought someone on here may be able to point me in the right direction.
Thanks,
yeats

Right, not an easy thing to achieve.

The vehicle must first be insured against its VIN (as it will not have a VRM until registered with the DVLA).

You must then get it MoT'd against its VIN and then present it to VOSA for a Single Vehicle Approval - SVA. At over 10 years, it is outside the EU mutual approval scheme. If work is necessary for the original vehicle to meet UK C&U regs (UK Type Approval) then you will need to produce evidence of this work having been done (receipts). I suspect that you will at the very least need to change the speedo for mph instead of kph. Dual marking is OK as long ass the mph figures are dominant.

Once you have the SVA, you can take it with the other docs to DVLA (actuality a local office) and they will issue VRM and VED. The VRM will be such that the date coding will reflect the true age of the vehicle

At all times when looking at the guidance, you need to regard your vehicle as a personal import.

I suspect the hardest part may well be getting a garage to do the MoT without a VRM - they simply won't understand the procedure

Also, I forgot to mention (as it is not directly a vehicle document) that you will need either a receipt for VAT paid or a statement of nil VAT liability from HMRC before the van can be registered.
