Private plate that the seller wants to keep

Hello all!

Phatrams' daughter here.

I am viewing a car tomorrow and it has a private number plate on it. The advert says that the 'private plate is not included'.

When I purchase the car, will I get a number plate with it? Who is responsible for making sure the registration is changed? I want to make sure I understand it all before I go to view it!
Also, how long will it take to get the registration plate changed back to the standard style? I want to use the car asap after I have bought it.

Any help would be great!

If you are intending to buy from a private seller and not from a car sales dealer them be warned that if there is anything wrong with the car, you will not be able to take it back and you have no protection under the sale of goods act.

Make sure you take a test drive of at least 10 miles even if you have to put petrol in it yourself.

Preferably take a motor mechanic with you to look at it.

The car will go back onto it's original number plate & the tax disc exchanged.The seller should be paying the DVLA charges & restoring it for you.Check that's included when discussing price.

Not sure how long it takes.Try DVLA website.Caveat Emptor.

The seller is responsable for all paper work and costs. Be warned that DVLA may want to view the car. You may have to take it to your nearet DVLA for the transfer to be completed. Remember you will be doing all this work for the seller not you. I would not buy a car with a private plate if the transfer has not already been done

The seller cannot dispose of the vehicle before the transfer is complete - there a specific caution to this in the paperwork (V319).

The only way round it is for you to be the RK (ie V5 in your name); you can then give permission for the transfer by signing the V5 as the RK of the donor vehicle.

The transfer takes a couple of days (it used to be done over-the-counter while you waited, but sadly no longer). New V5s after about 4 weeks.

^ I did a tansfer a few months back, it took 3 weeks.
