Car removed without me knowing

Hello all. I moved house and left an old vehicle parked off the street - it was taxed and insured at the time, and as far as I'm aware I'm still paying insurance by direct debit, but the tax lapsed on the car. When I realised that I hadn't done anything about the car I went back to where it had been left, but the car is no longer there and I have been told by an old neighbour that they think it has been towed, I assume by either the council or DVLA. I'm not quite sure what I need to do at this point - will I receive notification that it has been towed? I'd like to just get the car crushed as I'm not interested in keeping it.

I realise that I shouldn't have forgotten about the car in the first place and am willing to pay whatever fines etc are due, but I'm wondering what to do now. Can anyone advise?
