Name change v Tax disc

I recently had a friend staying with me whom bought a car. Had the registration sent to my address as he was buying a place of his own. He then notified me the tax had run out and I taxed it for him online. I then decided to buy the car from him and filled in the paperwork and change of name etc. however, the tax disc never turned up. When my I called DVLA they said that because I taxed the disc before I was the name on the ownership docs that the disc was returned by the Post office (don't understand how they knew this!). So I have to pay to tax the car again as I know have received the V5 in my name, and then claim a refund. Does this make sense to anybody???????

So, are they saying the post office opens up all the tax discs and haves a read and then checks with DVLA who has their name on the log book before they will deliver.
Sounds like waffle to me.

The tax disc would go to the address on the V5. If it was returned by the PO, then it would only be because the postman decided the name and the address were wrong. It can take a week or so for an address change to filter down to the Disc issuing department, however how they expect you to claim a refund for a dsic you never received seems unusual unless they say it is 'lost'?

Erm, the vehicle is taxed, and the disc is missing - how can they ask for it to be "retaxed" - Simply apply for a duplicate disc, or report the original as not received....
