It does look like you are going to have to cough up (personally, I wouldn't pay and would run rings round them in paperwork, but that's just me, I'm not advocating you do the same), but I would also write to my MP (as with anything the DVLA do that is similar to this).

The more MPs hear about what a fascist, low-life scum organisation the DVLA has become the better. I only hope you have an MP that is in opposition and not actually in power. Those in power WANT for things like this to happen, those in opposition can only see it as a lever.

I had a similar thing when I used my car to drive to the main post office to actually purchase the tax, despite me showing the forms, the cash, the reminder, everything to the copper, he was having none of it - there are no busses where I am, so it left little choice. I was stopped and given some sort of notice or other where I had to pay 180 quid within 7 days (can't remember exact dates etc...). I didn't pay. I never heard another thing. I'm not suggesting you do the same, but when it's something like that, you'd expect a little common sense. Fine, target the persistent offenders, but not people innocently trying to abide by the law in the face of their making it harder and harder (i.e. my local post office used to issue tax discs, but that was stopped and the nearest place is now 12 miles away with no bus route).

This is what they did to me at the beginning of this year.

Car was parked on the road for a few days (hardly anyone uses it as cul-de-sac) and they clamped me for no road tax (i reckon someone reported it). I told them to take the car and crush it (was worth about £500 at that time) as i'd bought a new one. This way i didn't have to pay removal costs etc and i didn't want to tax it.

Then they sent me a court summons and out of court settlement of £75, which i paid, for not displaying road tax.

I was told they are two separate offences, but it is clear if i get clamped for not having road tax, i cannot display it. It's a set up to make money from people.
