A while ago in another thread I mentioned that my sister was sent a penalty by the DVLA for having no road tax after they refunded her tax. Her car had already been written off and scrapped when she applied for the refund. She informed them that it was scrapped as part of the refund application, but they claimed she needed to to do more to notify them and sent a penalty, which she paid because she didn't know how to fight it.
I have now had to scrap my aging car. I was worried the same thing would happen to me, so I sent a covering letter with the application for the tax refund. I asked them to let me know if they needed any other confirmation that the vehicle has been scrapped, and as far as I was concerned I had complied with the requirements by following the instructions on the refund application for a scrapped vehicle.
Yesterday I received this letter:
I don't quite understand what the last line means. I assume he meant to say "
otherwise you may still have to pay it..."
But in any case, they seem to be clearly admitting known incompetence in sending out false penalty notices.
