Default me V. Setanta

Hi, i signed up for Setanta the night Ricky Hatton fought about 5 or 6 weeks ago, on the night the lady on the phone assured me that i could cancel after a month and i would only have to pay the subscription fee of around £15.99(something around that figure), since then i have rang countless times and been told different dates when i can cancel by, i have now been charged one extra payment of around £4.00 and iv been told that even after i emailed them last night by way of a 'follow up' confirmation, i still will be charged another fee(around £4 again i think!) Im sure they said that i would receive a confirmation email but still i haven't heard anything...any advice please? These guys are really p**sing me off...

Hi there, yes there certainly has been progress with this..but not good news! they have now taken around £32 in total and are due to switch the signal off very soon after i finally received confirmation from them that they would cancel. I have rang so many times to tell them that i was originally told i would only be charged ONE payment of £15.99 and each time they have said that they would listen to the call as it was wrong advice that i had been given but they never have! What can i do to either get my money back or just to report them to someone? Apparently they have received bad press for this sort of thing before!! God im angry with them!

Hi there. I myself had an epic problem with Setanta Sports a while ago, i had signed up to them for the start of the 2007-2008 Premier League season, specifically as Aston Villa v Liverpool was the opening game of the season and it was on Setanta Sports i believe. It was £10 a month then, i signed up to it (im already a Sky customer) and when it came through it was all glitchy, barely worked, it was like Freeview in a bad reception area in the early days but even worse. It was like a moving slideshow of pictures from the game it was so bad.

I phoned them up to complain and cancel, they did the usual trick of trying to blame my equipment, which was futile as it was all only about a month old as i'd recently replaced it all with brand new stuff, Sky Box, TV etc the works. Then they said that not only would i have to pay for the full month (which we were 3 days into and had not received any service to speak of) but i'd also have to pay for the following month as a cancellation fee plus £4.99 Admin fee.

Needless to say i lost my rag with this lot, as charging for a service not provided is illegal for a start, but they were adament i was lying and that i should pay for it. Then i had some other plank on the phone with me saying my Dish is in the wrong place, as im in the East of England apparently my dish is alligned to receive Sky in perfect quality, but it needs to face the other way for Setanta. I refused to agree that i should be forced to pay for 2 dishes just to receive one channel and have gone without Setanta Sports ever since.

Absolutely awful company, waste of space, and if there is any justice in the World they will go bust and fall very soon. And to get any of my money they'll have to force it out of my cold dead hand.

I am in the same boat regarding Setanta. I signed up 5 months ago to receive Setanta via my freeview box.
The offer was free for 2 months though a 10.99 connection fee. It said i could cancel at any time as long as i gave 30 days notice and was before my payment date. So the just before 2 months were up i cancelled by sending an email to (requests@setanta.com) which is what they say on their T's and C's. I received no reply, though it has been opened as I requested reply on opening. So i was expecting my Setanta to switch off after the 16th which is payment day.
I hardly watched the channel as it is pretty poor coverage of sports. So I look at my bank account and see that i have been charged £15.99 on the 16th of the month. I should never have been charged this so i cancelled my direct debit via my online bank account.
1 day after this i have a phone call from Setanta saying why I have cancelled my direct debit. I explain to them that i sent them a cancellation request and they have ignored it and taken money out of my account. They say they do not have any cancellation request on their system, so i explain to them that i sent my request over 1 month ago and have the proof of this. The guy says there must have been a problem or something and explained that in order to cancel they do need to have my direct debit details. So i agreed to give them my debit details again, and he assured me that if the request was made 30 days before payment then no further payments would be taken. This is not what they say on their T's and C's but i just said to myself forget about the 15.99 that has been taken last month, no other payments will be taken so end of story. I also forwarded the email i had originally sent to the same address asking them to respond to my original cancellation request. No reply., though again the mail has been opened.
16th of this month comes along, and yet again £15.99 is taken from my account. So i again cancel my direct debit details online, and sure enough i get a call from Setanta asking why i have cancelled payment. I got into an argument with the docile divvy from Setanta claiming that I have cancelled my subscription. He goes on to say , as they did previous (no record of cancellation) I explain the same situation again, and he says that they require 30 days notice of cancellation for them to cancel. I explain to them again that my cancellation request was made OVER 2 months ago, and if it is right what they are saying then the 1st £15.99 was correctly taken and that should have been my last payment, and they should not have taken this months payment from me. They say that they must be processing my cancellation request and it takes a while, but for the cancelation to provide they do require my payment detail. I refused to give it to them as they have taken money out of my account when they should not have. He then says that without payment details on the account no cancellation will go through.
Why is it so bloody difficult to cancel a subscription. They have been on the phone 3 times today, 3 different operatiors demanding payment details. I am not going to give them my details again. I also would like a refund of £15.99.
I am not sure what to do now, as clearly they do not know what the hell they are doing themselves, only taking peoples money illegally. Who should I write to? I see somebody wrote to the MD and had no acknowledgement ??

Ok people: Read 'IdainFife's post :I'm not sure but call your card supplier and state that they were unauthorized transactions as see what they say. but remember advise them you have wrote to the company and gave them timelines to return the monies but they have failed to do so.

I told HSBC that the debits were not authorised by myself so they immediately refunded me £12 and sent a form for me to claim the rest! The result being that im getting my money back and Setanta are getting it right in the ar*e!! Fact!

The trouble is, you're making an untruthful declaration. They are still trading, and as of today appear to have had a financial injection on funds do aren't going to diassapear overnight. Declaring the funds were taken without authority (when they were) makes us complaining of unfair practices pretty weak. No wonder firms do this if customers are going to stoop so low too - we get what we deserve.

but when you only agree to one ppv and they then keep taking sums for a subscription that you didn't agree to I would say that was unauthorized.

You mean, like Sky?

Like phone calls - emails leave the consumer exposed to the failings of the broadcaster. An email 'receipt' proves nothing - not even that it has been read. A follow-up ohne call if emailling, or a follow up email if phoning are often required if you do not WRITE and sent a letter, which would be taken as absolute proof.
