Help with MIL problems?

Hi,

My MIL has been having numerous problems, her son used to live with her and now neither my DP nor my MIL talk to him or know where he is. The problem being is that she is getting letters constantly saying that debt collectors are going to go around to her house and get her things, one letter has now been addressed to the occupier and she is really panicking, she is a pensioner and gets really wound up about these things.

She is worried they will get in contact with her landlord and what i would like to know is is this harrasement is there anything that can be done.

She puts on the letters not known at this address then sometimes my dp calls them and says he doesn't know where his brother is.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated

I would write a letter from your MIL stating categorically that he doesn't live there any more and to stop writing to him at this address. Further letters will eb seen as harrassment and your MIL will report them to the OFT and TS if they continue.

Personally I would report them to the OFT and TS. It is against the OFT's guidelines for debt collection to persue a third party for the debt as well as to act in a threatening manner (this includes correspondence). When complaining I would give the OFT and Trading Standards a copy of the letters you have received.
You may also wish to contact the police.
