Question Outstanding debt

I've been living at my current address for 1 year now.
I recently purchased my Credit Report from Equifax a few days ago and found a 'Default' placed on my file by Nat West Bank Plc in Apr 05 at my previous address ...(Penalty Charges for Current Acc i'd had with them)
I paid this debt and thus it shows as current status 'satisfied' 07/05/05.

Also, under heading Credit Searches is an 'Outstanding Debt search' made by a Bcw Group Plc T/a Buchanan Clark on 16/01/06 at the same address with whom i've never even heard of -Let alone had any dealings with!

I located them on the internet and found out that they are a DCA. I telephoned their Glasgow office to query it all.

I told them what I had found in my Credit Report from Equifax and asked what this 'outstanding debt' was all about....... To whom it was supposed to be owed to and for how much, etc?

Bcw had no record of my name, address in question or any debt registered against me on their files, and gave me another telephone number to call in Stratford-upon-Avon.
Again, exactly the same....no knowledge of me, address or debt. They also kept asking for my 'reference number' to which I hadn't a clue what they were on about.
Basically, they had never heard of me.

Ok, simple mistake I thought!
So I put it to them nicely that if they couldn't explain why this rather dubious and damaging search entry was on my Credit Report, then I would like them to remove it asap...as it is having an adverse effect on my credit rating/score.
They told me that they could not do so as they have no record of having entered such information on their files in the first place.
They added that they 'do not make credit searches on a person(s) Credit File'
(so why is their name next to the entry on my report?)
......and hung up on me.

I reported this to Equifax and asked them to investigate and for their help and assistance in the matter. I received the following reply;-

'the search was in relation to an oustanding debt due to Nat WEst Bank Plc. What was carried out was a trace search on the address. As the search was a true reflection of Mr ****** financial position at the time it cannot removed, ubless the debt was repaid prior to the search date of 16 January 2006. If this is the case and we are advised accordingly by the client I will be more than happy for the search to be removed.Alternatively the debt has been settled after this date a notice of satisfaction should be requested to be placed on his credit file which will counter act the search details recorded'

** I have copied it exactly the way it was received from Equifax

The client, bcw are saying that they have no record of me or any debt to them and completely deny the 'search entry' was made by them - Are they lying?

Equifax are saying it's relating to a debt - that i've already paid prior to 2006......Are they correct?

I'm in a real quandary as to the next course of action??

Default Re: Outstanding debt

Ask them (Equifax) to contact them to request the entry to be removed. As BCW dont have any idea who you are, they should simply say, fine by us, remove it.
