Angry Council tax debt collection for flatmate from 8 years ago!

I am being pursued by a debt collector on behalf of the city council for a sum of council tax which was not paid by my flatmate from April - July 2000!! I have written to them giving a photocopy of my bank statement highlighting my share that was paid yet they have sent a further letter to me (via the landlord), and have never contacted the other 2 flatmates threatening to put a hold on my bank account, arrest my wages etc etc. Any advice anyone, i have proved that it is not me who has not paid yet they continue to pursue and threaten me and have made no effort to contact the other 2 persons involved! Can they lawfully do this despite my proving my innocence?

as far as i know if u are not responsible for the debt then u dont have to pay.

i would contact them advising u are going to contact the council and CAB.

they can do anything they are suggesting with out the necessary court order.

It sounds as if the council tax was in your name and you may therefore be liable.
In which case it is your responsibility to collect the unpaid amounts from your flatmates.

Question : Did you have separate council tax bills for each person?

As Palomino states, who's name is on the council tax form, yours only or everybody who resided there for that particular time.

It woulld be important to know a few things.

1) As previously stated, was your name on the original council tax bill?

2) Has there been a Liability Order served? If so against whom?

3) When was the final demand for payment sent?
