I don't know how Welcome Finance operate or car finance. But some questions spring to mind: have you asked your questions re the termination in writing? I would want them to identify exactly which law they are talking about. Don't discuss anything on the 'phone though, you may need evidence to make a formal complaint further down the line.
Do you have a copy of your original agreement with the terms and conditions?
I would also reclaim the charges. Follow the same process as you have used for your bank charges. Would this not clear the balance?
1 last thing!! What sort of accounts were the defaults for?
